big popping problem!!

Well the guy did not tell me after I set the plunger lift to return it to tdc. He just said follow these directions which was from genos garage which never said anything about plunger lift then to put it back to TDC and to use the snap-on kit. Then after time it just put the gear back on the shaft with key way back where it was so they fit together. I know BTP i thought the timing was right but i told you i might mess it up lol so what is the correct way to time this?

My advice, get a new pump guy. If you have a key way in your pump/gear then you're kind of between a rock and a hard place. You're timing has already been set for you, at what ever it may be. Only way to see where it is would be to use the Snap On set and put the pump gear on with the key way lined up and turn the engine over to TDC and see how much lift you have with it set like that and determine your timing from there. That is pretty much all you're gonna have if it is in fact keyed like you say. I feel bad for you if it is because who ever this "Pump guy" that did that is an idiot and didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.

Wow! Where are these guys coming from?

Unless the pump gear is adjustable, there is no way you can adjust pump timing if the gear is keyed to the shaft, PERIOD. Everybody's pump shaft has a keyway in it. The gear does not unless you have had one cut in it.

Skip gear teeth to advance timing? Wow! Why hasn't someone told us about this till now? That reminds me about the know-it-all I ran into at a pull that said setting the timing was easy, 1" on the harmonic balancer equals 10* of timing.

Again, wow.

If the pump gear is keyed and the gear is not adjustable the only way the timing could be done right is if you take the front gear case cover off or else you wouldn't be able to pull the gear far enough off to clear the key from the grooves that have been cut for the key. I do understand the concept of your keyed gear though. once its on it will hold it in place but to change the timing there seems to be a lot more involved. You would have to take the cover off, pin time the pump, pop the gear loose, find your TDC, roll the crank however far you want it, and then put the gear back on.

The 1" harmonic balancer trick ordeal is not too precise. 1" on the factory balancer is about 11.5* and on a fluidamper its going to be less since the overall diameter is bigger. Thats a rough way to do it but its definitely not accurate. If you do it like that you definitely would want to check it with a timing light and it would probably be a lot of trial and error.

that was on a mustang dyno at my buddies shop while this was happening but in 4th it barly does it

and what does my dyno numbers have to do with anything? If you dont think there real then dont look

Gotcha that's why im here cause im confused on this whole thing. How it can put down those numbers and yet still run like crap. As the truck warms up it gets better and I pulled the fan off this weekend and it was about 210 for engine temp and hardly no miss or pops or anything ran great. Stuck the fan back on and its about 190-210 but has popping and miss. I'm getting the snapon timing set today. I'm just going to ditch the keyway and start from the beginning

And pump work is not my thing. I can build the engine but I always had the pump guy do it. So that's why I asked what is the right way to do IT

Good move getting the kit. You may not be pleased with the first setting and will be able to move it. If you don't have true tdc, I recommend the dropped valve method.

alright thanks golfersmith! and thank you to everyone else as well so far. now i have to wait a few days for the kit to get here.

BigPapa, I was not suggesting that he jumped teeth on his pump gear. I was trying to make a point that if he was trying to set timing by using the keyed gear, the only way is to jump a tooth or so and that one tooth was a big change in timing.
