This year I am gonna be slowly gathering parts to build a motor for my truck next winter. I don't need a $30k motor build from one of the big name shops, I basically want to add studs to the bottom end, new pistons, more aggressive cam. It will be running a 2.8 S400 turning 5k while pulling.

Pistons- What piston to run in a p-pump 24v with up to 35* timing. I will probably consider dropping the compression just a little, but I still want it to be able to start in the summer without a full can of ether.

How bad will a 15:1 CR be to start?
What pistons to start with, stock 24v, 03-04 CR, 600 series CR? They will get shaved, flycut, and I need a bowl wide enough for the timing i want to run, will CR bowl be wide enough, or have 24v pistons machined for a wider bowl?

Rods-will stock rods be good, or do they need to be shotpeened, cryo'd, polished or some other special treatment. everything will be balanced before install.

Girdle- use a stock CR black stiffener or pony up the extra cash for the modified one from haisley and tie the main caps in?

I will be getting another head done, P&P, probably fire ringed this time around rather than o-ringed. Just need some guidance one what I'll need to put together a reliable bottom end.

i have built mine just about like you are talking about doin. I am waiting for my new scheid cam to come in. Once i cut the valve reliefs my compression should be about 14 to 1. This also includes opening up the bowl for 35* timing. While im getting the pistons cut im sending the head to be p&p ed.

who is cutting the pistons? what pistons did you use? any specs you can give me?

We are cutting the pistons. My neighbor has a mill. Scheids cut 50 thous reliefs the first time so all we have to do is take them another 100 thousandth deeper. Then open up the bowl like smokem mentioned in that other thread. These are stock SO pistons. My bottom end is studded with just the stiffener plate, a1 rod bolts and stock crank and rods.

looks like ill be able to save some money if i can re-use my pistons and just have them cut.

most of my money will be spent on the machine work on the pistons, to clean up the block, and having everything balanced.

Just may be an 8-hole cylindrical blind nozzle with a 145° pattern later this year.

Terry at powerparts will cut your pistons for 150$. I ordered the biggest cam i could get without having to install cam bearings in the block. The cam is a new blank with bolt on gear retainer.

I know its not needed, I just fail to see the point in a piece of steel I can bend over my knee.

30° for a stock piston, too many variables to have a set timeline as of now.

Ok thanks, I'm at 30* on now on stock pistons, but only pulled twice with it set there. I think I'll go back down to 27* so these pistons will survive another season.

I will have tomarrow. LOL It was buggin the crap out of me. We are going to put my drop in scheid cam in Jeffs truck i think so we can get it back up and running. The cam is gonna be the most expensive part of this deal. I just want to make full use of your pump Kevin.
