Cam install tips

Dont feel bad. I learned that lesson with a driveshaft on my 5500. Pulled the last bolt out of the rear yoke as someone said something to me. My head kept from hurting the yoke! We all learn and I tend to know better but learn the lesson the hard way.

Another tip, don't drop the old cam on your toe. I kept it from hitting the ground and damaging it, but damn, I regret it.

LOL I wasn't even starting pump timing yet. I was just trying to get the cam in.

Not what im getting at, with the dots togather crank & cam the tdc pin will go in to the cam gear (on the back) of the cam gear.

Don't mean to hijack but I am getting ready to do a cam on my common rail and I've heard that rather than cut the cross member that would normally block the cam from coming out, you can jack up the engine enough to clear this. I'm not really sure where to place the jack because I'm kind of scared to put it on the oil pan, but the front edge of the block right in front of the pan is only about 2 inches wide. I'm scared that if I put a 2x4 on edge across there it will fall. Any one experienced with this?

I used a hoist to lift the motor when I took the oil pan off. Even when lowered back down, I had no issue with cam clearing the crossmember.

I'm guessing CR crossmember's are different?

I'm not sure where your crossmember is but mine is about even with the camshaft itself, so you would need to raise it about 3 inches

Its a 3rd gen issue. One more reason I love my old rust buckets.
