Cam install tips

I vompletely forgot about the tappet cover. You have to pull the pump for that thpugh don't you?

Cam is in. Had it 180* at first, so had to pull it and do the damn tappets twice LOL.

But all good just need to re-lash.

BTW: Have stock tappets and cam for sale if anyone needs them :D

Why did you take it back out? Just re-time the pump $.02

Because valves were hitting the pistons and not letting it turn over. At least thats what we thought. And when we turned the crank over one full cycle, and put the cam back in, it fixed it.

I've also got the timing between 18-22*. I'm assuming the pump was left pinned at the stock 12.5 or whatever it was, so I'm probably at about 18. Might go higher in the coming weeks, depending on how she drives.

I've also already noticed a decrease in idle EGT's, and I've got a new set of feeler's so I can relash them now that they are hot.

Got it out for a test run. Blew the passenger side boot instantly, put back on uber tight and it works good now. Boost comes on faster, EGT's don't get over 1300 now, smoke is about the same, but I'm not allowing full boost yet without the studs in.

All in all, install was fine, just BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO SPLINTER THE DOWELS. Goes a lot easier too with the oil pan off. I was able to just reach up and push the tappets onto the dowels for almost all of them.

Did you mean you had the cam 180 out, or the crank? If you turned the crank over a full 360, it would be in the exact same spot. If the crank was out only 180, then I could see you having those issues. Either way though, its been sorted out. Enjoy the cam. Mine made a big difference. Can't wait to get one for my daily driver.

That's a good point. All I understand is that I turned the motor over a full rotation and it fixed it. I might have completely misunderstood what was wrong though.
I can't wait to really open it up now. Boost comes on a few hundred rpm sooner now, I can't wait for the re-gear. Truck actually feels lighter now too.

Isnt the Cam at half speed since this is a 4 stroke diesel. Crank spinning 1 rev would be 1/2 rev of the cam.

Yea, but if you spin the crank over once (with the cam not engaged), the crank is still in the exact same place, as is the cam. If the cam gear is 180 out from the crank marks, it is still right since in one crank revolution, its alignment marks are back together.

Very true Tate. It will play havoc with the timing though if you get it out. I bet that with everything out of whack it was off by a tooth. When he slid the cam back in I bet it lined everything back up. I talked to a guy one time that put a timing chain in a sb chavy that timed the marks at 12 on both gears. It actually ran, just not well.

If the gears were lined up right them I am with Tate and it shouldn't have mattered then. The piston will still be in the same spot. Are you sure the valves were set correctly the first time?

They weren't lashed yet, but they the rockers where tight on both ends.

I'm too the point where I don't know, and don't care. I'm just glad it runs again.

I hear ya. Just trying to figure out what you did wrong as I am going about this as soon as I get enough time off of work to tear the truck down. My cam has been holding the wall up for a couple weeks now.

Another tip, don't drop the old cam on your toe. I kept it from hitting the ground and damaging it, but damn, I regret it.

If the dots line up and the timing pin lines up you cant be off.

LOL I wasn't even starting pump timing yet. I was just trying to get the cam in.
