Disappointing Numbers with t66, think I need tuning!

Turbonetics, sent us a bunch of turbos to test through mid 2008. We never had any impressive results with their 66, or an experimental 61. About 40 psi boost from the 66 is all we could get.

That one I ran ended up having a .58 housing on it and was 1 to 1 at 40 psi and went south fast after that, it spooled lighting fast but had no lungs up top, sorry but it will not come close to a Silver Bullet.

.58 is really really tight Jim no wonder that thing spooled fast!!! I can't imagine the drive pressure you're getting with that charger ha. Did you ever run it with the ED Gate?

It ran with the ED gate and I had it set at 45 psi but I never got a chance to run it on the bottle, that was one of the reasons for the gate.

You guys must be ending up with different Turbonetics turbos than mine... I'm at 52psi, mid 11's, & perfect streetability. The only other 66mm I can reference is an HTT 14/66, & my TN 84ar 66 spools Way faster & pulls harder up top at nearly the same boost.

Matt, your success with your charger is about the only reason I'm so frustrated with what my truck is doing or better yet isn't doing. I will let you know how this sunday goes and what all I tried to get it to work. Thanks for all your help man!

Nick...
Welcome to my world....

In that world many of the 12v "tuners" will chime in and tell you may things EXCEPT something that your missing.

I looked at the video and its sure is slow to light but with the fuel you have on a non-stand built pump I'd say your close to what you should have seen for the fuel you have.I do not like the fact that it made max power/torque so late in the run and that they are so close.........Andy

I've been running 66s for years "htts" and they like a bunch of fuel early to spool. "not too much timing" If you don't have enough fuel you'll never see much boost. I was running 50 lbs on a 66/65/14 and now 54 lbs on a 66/71/13ss. They both will spool right now on a cr with enough fuel. If you are not running enough fuel or a lot of timing you may be better off with a 64. A 66 works better on the other side of 600 hp.

I think I am all alone here, but does that smoke look thin to anyone else? Maybe its just the wind or am I just retarded? I know with my afc setup loose like Nick is describing it would bellow some really thick black smoke before the turbo hit.

Yeah I noticed that too. Seems like it should be rollin coal to get that turbo spooled.

Is it possible with the 4.10 gear ratio and 265's that the dyno isn't putting enough load on the motor to see the number's he's getting on the street?

best during a 78 degree beautiful day with a very slight head wind was 12.92 at 104.5 with a 1.88 60'. Spun 3 times and bogged for the 1.88 60 run. Mph was 104.5 +/- .1-.2mph all 4 runs. Raceweight was 6375.

First run was afc all the way back with starwheel backed half way into the access port. The next runs were like I dynoed with the only difference being I have ground the rear washer flat and added a front spacer washer between the rod and front diaphram washer. It appears fueling is not my issue from my limited testing. I say this because the afc was so tight on the first run it was very diffucult to build boost. The only way to take more low end fueling out would be to swap injectors/delivery valves and street testing of 181 delivery valves vs 191s has lead me to believe the 191s were stronger measured with the sotp meter.

I'm going to try a pdi t4 manifold, a turbo sock, and a manifold blanket to get this turbo to spool faster and hopefully find my area under the curve. I don't know if it will work or not but time will tell. If that doesn't work then I'll likely try a different charger.

I'll get vids up in a bit.

Boost was only in the 45psi range and I noticed the needle moving back and forth pretty quick possibly indicating turbo surge.

First run. Tight AFC setup. Had a problem building boost on the line until it got to about 12psi and then it shot up to 30-35. Result tire spin.

Loose AFC. BTW, both runs I was on and off the throttle due to slight wheel hop hence the quick drop in smoke then back on.

I think she's got fuel lol!

This video is still processing but should come up soon.

Congrats man! 12's first time out is freakin awesome! The numbers from the dyno and your track times are about dead on too!

IMHO The grey smoke on the big end looks near perfect. A lot thinner than I expected to see w/ your mods.
265/75's & 4:10 gears is not really a good final drive ratio. If you could get up close to a 35'' tall tire (like a 315/75) your effective final would be a lot closer to ideal.
(unless you happen to have a set of 3:54 axles hangin around....;)
On the AFC.. I'd go back to the settings on the first pass & simply slide the box forward to get a little more rack before boost.
Anxious to hear the results with a log manifold, & no other mods.

nice runs, when did you lock your converter? that alone can shave time off you et's.
