DIY coolant by-pass?

Using info from others and doing a lot of reading...I came up with my own parts list and started this thread :

I did decide to weld a bung onto the t-stat housing instead of tapping it though. I just couldn't trust a 14 tpi tap in a housing that thin that was curved to boot..it's a recipe for leaks.

The housing is cast though....make sure to use a high nickle rod and pre-heat everything if you elect to weld it.

I just did mine close to the rad. hose, it was thicker there and got 3 threads tapped. Screwed in my 1/2'' AN adapt. and I feel confident with no leaks (over 100 miles now).

Last year I ran a back plate with a 90* and dumped it into the heater core line with no type of regulator or pressure valve with no problems.

also.. could a person just run a smaller hose... so it can dain.. like 1/4 hose.. and just leave it open all the time... what you guys think..

Our trucks have Radiator caps rated at 16psi. I would think that you will want a relief that is rated to blow off at 17-18psi.

I adjusted my relief valve to open right after my thermostat opens.

When I first adjusted it, my truck wouldn't go over 140* driving down the road. That tells me that the relief valve is opening up to early, meaning that it was adjusted to less than rad cap pop off pressure.

i thought relief valves operated on pressure and t-stats on temp?

and what does rad cap pop press have to do with this?

thanks, don
