I finally got my Hamilton Big Stick billet cam installed this weekend. Took my buddy and I 5.5-6 hours from start to finish. The install wasn't very bad at all. We didn't even have to use a press on the gear. We were able to beat the old cam out with some heat and a hammer and socket and to get the gear on the new cam we threw it in the oven and the cam in the freezer and it just fell on to the cam (slick trick). Also found that my dowel pin was about 1/8" away from the edge of the hole. So we pushed it back in and fabbed up a tab for it.

Now how it works. First thing I noticed when I fired it up was how incredibly smooth and quiet the engine was. It was like a sewing machine. Even the exhaust was smoother and quieter. Went for a spin and the bottom end is much improved. Feels stronger and smoother. The midrange and top end is where this cam comes alive. The pull from 2000-3500 is nasty. Turbo spool is vastly improved. EGT's are down about a 100* and boost is also down about 5 psi. Which is good cause that means that there is less restriction in the engine. I haven't had a chance to do any standing stop runs but I'll get that done tomorrow.

Overall, I'm very happy with it. It's done everything that Zach said it would do. Thanks for making a great product zach. :D :D

new toys are fun...
any additional new boost? :)

anyone care to tell me how a cam "makes the truck" quieter? oh yes, i understand the valves being adjusted properly could make a world of difference. all too many times i read about the cam "making it so much" quieter. just wondering if this is a bunch of bunk.

I'm guessing the lengthened duration of the cam (you can run your fingers over the lobes and feel the extra duration) makes it quieter and smoother since there's not as much valve noise. That and a more efficient design. My valves were set at .010 and .020 before the cam and after the cam so any results were directly from the cam.

And my boost is actually lower now but that's not a bad thing. It's a good thing. As you probably know, boost is a measure of restriction. So if you install something like a cam or ported head and your boost numbers drop it's most likely not from something bad but from the engine breathing more efficiently.

I see you said billet, I didn't think you could run a billet against the stock cam journals? Did you change the tappets and how bad of a job was that?

with my cam that I installed the rpm range is smoother the truck doesnt clack clack as much. At Idle my truck is louder it sounds like a lope you can hear the valves staying open longer on mine right out the air filter. Thats my explanation of the new sound.

That's the exact opposite of mine. At idle mine is much smoother and quieter.

congrats on the install, I take it you'll be in Alvarado?

Tirefrier, your sound might be due to much extended duration on the intake. at low rpm, it sounds like you are pushing a good bit of the air back into the intake, since the intake valve could be open longer when the piston is coming up.

Kipo, ill be in alvarado friday night and all weekend. Just look for a lifted blue dodge parked under the covered area with the hood up.

Firemed, things are going good. No longer in san angelo thank god. How bout yourself?

haha, yeah a little slow their. Things are going good here. I should be back in san angelo in sept-oct i think for another class.
