Got my hamilton cam installed

I've been reading that. I know brian's is running better than mine. Idles better, drives better, runs better, don't know why. I think the secret to a successful p-pump swap is just starting with a factory pump with factory plate and factory timing and getting the truck running good that way first and then start playing with it.

Csm- the cams typically spool the charger about 150 rpms sooner. The exhaust although it has more duration at .050 only has slightly more duration on the seat. Opening the exhaust slightly sooner uses the stronger exhaust pulse to spool the charger better, while not opening it too soon and reducing the engines torque efficiency. On the intake we have considerably more duration 181@.050" as opposed to 159@.050" on the factory cam however, the seat time is almost identical to the factory profile. This aids in getting a crisp snappy bottom end but also makes sure the power band continues much higher in the rpm band.

Ragged edge- We have a core coming out soon that should handle 5k no problem. In the past 13mm pumps have been a culprit in a lot of cam failures. Really more than the 13mm pumps it has been the "cut" cams in the 13mm pumps that has caused failures. After massive loading on the injection ramp the cam within 10-20 degrees in some instances starts to go back down for fill time. This creates a massive load-unload harmonic that is transfered to the cam gear, and in some instances causes a failure on the first cylinder on the cam. On the stock injection pump cam, after injection the cam takes its sweet time returning to base circle to fill the plunger galley around 180 degrees. This creates a much smother running pump with much less harmonics in the front gear train. To combat harmonics failures we have redesigned our cores. First our new cast billets have thicker cores, radiusing in areas prone to failure, this reduces stress risers(sharp points most likely to fail), included a bolt on option and an option for an oil groove that will help oiling on the front cam journal where most of the torsional stresses are. In short I believe 5k will now be a piece of cake for a cast billet cam. As for profiles we have many that will do just fine at 5k. Most important is making sure your head can flow at leat 200+ cfm, your timing is correct, you have enough spring pressure , and that your drive pressures are always in check.

I'm thinking sigma, s400/sXXX twin setup, 1" lift cam, custom head, 400 shot of nitrous, and 1x.5 injectors. That oughta get me at 500hp. LOL We'll see about the p-pump. I hate doing it cause that's the easy way out (hopefully LOL) but it may be my only option since me and VP's don't seem to match.

why do some people see "the easy way out" as something bad?

I contend that throwing cash on a burning pile of pride is the M O that makes no sense

if you think its hard to get a vp to run when it takes seconds to just change the tune...try tuning a p-pump to perform and still drive. no offense to him, but NickTF is having many problems getting his 12v o perform they way it should

a p-pump isn't hard to tune to run hard and still drive it... Nick's current problems are turbo related... once he gets the right turbo setup for his combo, it'll be money

I certainly hope and believe so:(. We will see soon enough with the new charger. Honestly I think it runs fine, just isn't making the power it should which as forrest hinted appears to be air related.

dude, 12's right out of the box? not too shabby IMO

Thanks Forrest but trust me, nothing has come easy on this truck at all, i've spent more hours in my garage trying things and switching crap that it's become very frsutrating. If this new charger with more air then I probably need doesn't get it i'm really going to be scratching my nugget:bang

you trying to hit 600hp drug free? I can't remember your exact fueling, but with a charger with some serious lungs, I don't think you'll have any trouble...

it'll be an absolute animal on the bottle... maybe even step up to a little dirtier DV for the bottle :D

Cause the easy way out is for quitters in my opinion and I am not a quitter (this does not apply to all p-pump converters). Not to mention that the p-pump is a last resort for me and I hate going to last resorts. And because I can. And even if I do p-pump it I'm still gonna drop a CR in it and build that to. And when that's done maybe I'll drop a 6.7L in it and build that. Or maybe I'll commit the sin of all sins and drop a dmax in it and build that. Who knows. All I know is that as long as I'm alive I will keep this truck and will play with it however I see fit and spend money on it whenever I see fit despite what some people think. I don't give you financial advice on your trucks so why are you giving me advice on mine?

My truck is paid for, it's reliable, it costs me nothing but $300/yr in insurance, fuel, and oil. So why would I want to go in debt on a truck that'll cost me who knows how much a month between insurance and a car payment? Not to mention that I really don't like the 3rd gen interiors and from the factory they look plain and boring. So to get it where I want I'd have to lift it and spend money on the looks of it not to mention have to buy another built auto. Mine is built the way I want it already so there's a bunch of money I don't have to spend a second time. All I want from a 3rd gen is the steering (which can be installed on my truck) and the power (which can be accomplished by a motor swap). Other than those 2 items a 3rd gen offers me nothing I want so I ask again, why in the world would I want to go in debt over an entire truck when all I want is 2 parts off of it? That seems like pretty freaking retarded financial spending there. Sure I've spent enough on my truck to buy a used 06 but I've spread it out over 8 years. It basically boils down to $3125/yr for what I've spent on my truck. If you figure that I have even a $400/month note (not including insurance and I don't even have remotely enough credit for financing that cheap) I'm spending $4800/year. That's a $1675/yr difference. And you'd be crazy if you think I'd leave it stock. So then I would have not only the $4800/yr payment for the truck, I'd then have to spend money on building the motor and everything else the way I want it. Even if I was in the financial position to buy a 3rd gen I wouldn't. I don't want a 3rd gen. I want my truck. So I'll ask the question again, why in the world would I want to have a car payment/expensive insurance on a vehicle that really offers me nothing more than power and better steering when I could spend just the money on the motor and steering (really just the steering box) and still have a truck I love and still be able to build the motor up for less than it would cost me to finance a newer truck and build it?

Really I don't even care about the money. Money has no effect on my thinking when it comes to building my truck. If I have the money I'll buy what I want. If I don't, then I wait and save up. That's all it comes down to. If I want to drop a CR in it then I'll do it. Can't afford to right now so I'll just wait and bide my time and save my pennies till I can. And in the mean time if I have a little extra cash floating around I'm gonna screw with my VP just to keep me entertained. I play with my truck because it's cheaper than hookers and makes me happier. Not because it makes financial sense. If I wanted to make financial sense out of it I would have left it stock and sold it after 6-7 years since after that a vehicle starts paying you back.

I just want to get into the high 11s fuel only. From there we'll see what we'll see.

Dude how many beers you had??LMAO!!!

Tyler I seen Brians numbers and now I got to turn mine up!! Going to install a set of 3rd gen wheels my dad gave me with some street tires. Maybe street tires want spin like those all terrians did. Going to add some serious weight to the ass end next time. Was tuning it before I left and took some notes. You know I was only running 60psi boost when I hit 500hp. Maybe crank the boost up to. Did you and brian get your traction bars from Mike? Think I'll need a set once I start racing/pulling. Going to try and break it. See a quote on here somewhere, " I have seen 6 cans of beer make a truck do things that 6 bottles of nos could not". Think that is close.

Wife said you guys are getting some bad weather right now. Hail and tornado stuff. Be careful. See you in June for party time.

Only 1. His post struck a nerve.

Brian raps his 60psi gauge around like it's nothing. He's waiting for the needle to break. LOL We both got our bars from mike.

Weather was nasty. Lots of hail (poor truck was outside in it) and the sky was a sickening color of green. Already been reports of a tornado in llano from the same storm. But it only last half an hour or so and now the sun is out and the birds are chirping so all is well. Time to detail the car.

Tyler give me your truck for a week and dont ask questions and it will make over 500 hp when you get it back.

Cause it ain't always about the money. Sometimes it's satisfaction in reaching a goal, sometimes it's just what you want or don't want.

Most true words ever spoken on here.

I'd love to see you break 700 on that VP and then swap a killer CR in yours at 2wd hight with a sport front end:rockwoot:

Thanks for the kind words yall and I appreciate the help.

Now back to our originally scheduled thread.

Zach, I've got close to a 1000 miles on the cam now and I'm still impressed with it. It makes driving just so much more fun. Especially in OD where having 3.54 gears on 35's and a tight auto sucks. I can actually push the throttle and go somewhere without a huge smoke show. I'm finally doing a mileage test for ya (or I'm trying to at least LOL) and will have some numbers for ya by next week.

If anyone is on the fence about getting a cam get off and get one. Its not a giant power adder but it definitely widens the power band and makes it feel like it picked up a ton of power. This is definitely in my top 5 of mods I've bought for this truck.

Only 1. His post struck a nerve.

wow, obviously!

Tyler, you're a kid... The reason I try to give kids financial advice on their toys is because I wish someone had given me financial advice on mine when I was a kid.

You really think that in the grand scheme of life, when you're on your death bed and have all of your family around you that the fact that you built a 700hp VP truck is going to be tops on your list of accomplishments? For your sake, I truly hope not...

To the rest of the world, a 700hp truck is a 700hp truck... pretty damn unimportant, but if you want a 700hp truck, I say go the cheapest route and leave some time/money for other facets of life.

how is P-pumping the truck going into debt?

look at jkt... I told him to p-pump that thing years ago... he could have spent a few grand and been done with it and been enjoying the truck all this time... how many pumps has he gone through? how many hours of labor and frustration has he gone through? Hey, if he ENJOYS spending tons of money and time burning money int he name of pride? by all means!!!

I'm just offering up an alternative. When I mention a p-pump to him, he laughs and says "nah, I'm gonna do it w/ a VP damnit!!!" w/ a smile on his face.

when I mention it to you, you start rattling on about pride and accomplishments... so perhaps my suggestion and reasoning struck a chord w/ you and you don't want to admit to yourself that it had a decent ring to it? ;) :p

I knew everything when I was your age too... Here's me hoping that one day you'll see where I'm coming from on this

Tyler knows a P-Pump is the easier route.

It's not what he wants.

Why do I hunt for a lot of my meat, I could buy it for WAY less. Less money, less time, less wear on my truck, wouldn't have to have an expensive dog to feed and care for all year and hunt for 2.5 months. Because I can afford it, and I enjoy it. It is a "waste" of money, but it's cheaper than being an alcoholic with a therapist.

No financial advisor would approve of any part of your budget going to motorsports unless it was in the recreation part of your budget. And if people are spending $XXX on their truck to reach a goal the way they want to get there, without going hungry or homeless who cares? And if they want the fast truck more than food or a place to live, I still really don't care that much.
