Hellmann tank sump

Looks very nice Bart.

Thanks. I am really happy with it.

Great photos guys! Joe gave me a helluva deal on mine (as with you all, I'm sure). He also powdercoated it too! Black!!!

Now, need to get some fittings, find me hole saw....and store 40 gallons of diesel somewhere....

Just DRIVE the truck and run the diesel out. Powdercoated black will be sick.

around here the tweakers would have a field day with this. Cut the hose and fill the juggs.

Question-- how did you guys clean the shavings out of the tank?

How about using a braided stainless line? Should be rough on a knife:D

Thats a nice piece. I thought about doing something similar with one of these 2 from summit, but Hellemans looks like a lot easier install.

Dang that's pretty enough to make me reconsider robbing the 14gal fuel cell out of the racecar...

I think this is way better than the siphon tube, But im not getting the baffels where are they at? Im thinking maybe putting that fuel tank foam in the bottom of my tank while i got it out.

I know DJ ran it in his tank on his 6.0 truck for at least 3 years and it never fell apart with diesel. I forgot all about it till it was mentioned here.

Do they make an Aluminum wool? Like steel wool only it won't rust in the tank from water? Enough of that should work the same I would think?

I was told that stuff deteriorates pretty bad. Might want to investigate it.

So fuel cell out of the racecar good or bad idea??? Maybe I will go with this sump and figure out how to make a baffle of sorts...

That sump from summit will work just make sure the ports are facing the back fo the truck. I am putting the same sump into my 1970 mustang 22 gallon tank instead of a draw straw with baffling. I like the hellmen idea too, looks very clean.

just got off the phone with summit, they said there foam is 100% safe to run with diesel fuel.

All modern saftey foam is fine with Diesel, as it was developed for use with Jet A. Most are NOT ok with Nitro. Oxygenated fuels also tend to break down the foam fairly quickly.

What are guys that have ran the foam in the stock tanks doing about the sending unit?

I was going to run a sump with a surge tank, but foam and a 1/2" straw are way cheaper and easier, as long as I can get it to work with the stock sending unit.

So um, how modern does the foam need to be? The fuel cell I have is every bit of 15 years old... Closer to 16 or 17...

Why not try to find out where the float for the sending unit would hit on the bottom of the tank and cut out a hole for it in the foam there so it can go all the way down?

As far as the age of the foam I am not sure. I would "THINK" that what you have is ok, as from what I inferred from the article I read, was the foam was developed for early jet fighters, so like WW2 era?

I am sort of worried about the foam shifting, and or getting it in place and then cutting it and getting all the small pieces out, or cutting it out of the tank and then getting it to line up. Right now I am thinking about stuffing it just to the point where it will not move, and then running a holesaw down to make the area for the pump and then doing my best with the shop vac to clean up as much of the mess as possible.

I still may just sump it and build a surge tank and call it a day, but foam is so cheap... arggg
