New engine build Scania DC1601 for our semi truckpuller.

After the first day on the Libya Rally Schoones dakar hold a 5 and 8 place overall.

This rally is a test for human and machine and the new Euro 6 DAF/Paccar engine is holding very well. Most teams use this rally as a shakedown for the new rally cars in preparation for Le Dakar Rally.

Brand new semi truck puller from Volvo van Dijk Ny Titan. I think they get some motivation from the one in Finland.

This is really something where everything comes together really well. 16L D16G Volvo engine HobbySport Semi Truckpuller and I think we set a new level of performance in this class. First place on first completion event.

Class rules for this truck are max 2500RPM and a 70mm inlet restriction on front of the compressor.

The engine is one of the last generation 750Hp 16L Volvo engines with a F2 Delphi fuel injection system. We made some small modifications to the engine and used a S500SX turbocharger as it’s on of the best with a wide operating range and you only notice that there is some inlet restriction due to having a more discharger air temp from the compressor.
In all these engines do not need a load of boost pressure to make a load of power/torque and if you compare this to an engine with a conventional fuel pump it will notice that your able to maintain hi RPM a lot longer during a pull dropping the engine down to 1074Rpm before it drops power.
The ECU configuration is a copy of the Volvo D13 Race engine with a bit more fuel and the RPM governor set @ 2500Rpm so yes you can copy paste a load of things making it work well first time. LOL

Sometimes the assistance trucks need some support as well. Day two of the rally saw great sandstorms so poor visibility in some places.

Also the jeep did very well in this Libya Rally. 8 place overall and 3 place in de 4X4 class.

How did the big truck do?

The big truck run problem free and a load more power than the previous engines. Looks like the boring stuff like calculation worked well by setting limits in the ECU system.
Also BorgWarner turbo system have been a great help by giving us the information needed to run the turbo on this engine to the max. I think we proved that an aftermarket ECU has far better potential than modifying a OE ECU spending years improving things not able to set it up like you want it. Only the teams with factory support will be able to mange on the ECU side of things but there are not many factory teams left.

The Jeep with 2.8L CR engine was second in class and did win one overall stage as well. Short before this rally we had to reduce some torque as it was bending connrods, but new stronger ones are on there way. To compensate for less torque I try to keep max torque a bit longer making more engine power over a wider range and this worked out well as this could result in the engine overheating.

The Toyota Hilux runs national rally event. There are more national event in a year but only last two days and have more service and have a low ambient temp compared with the desert conditions so most cars have more engine power and after they fix there gearbox problem they will upgrade to a bigger turbo and hope to get some more power out of this engine.
Also the is a new Toyota Hilux project on it’s way but this will be copy paste from the other rally car with a Garrett VNT turbo.

Not so good 6 place again having no traction. Increase in engine power on a stand track dos not give more traction. We have to do better next time but change will be slim to take the title this year.

Volvo is having a 3 place and standing first in the ranking championship now. Small problem do as the fuel lift pump refuse to give any fuel pressure in the pulloff so they had to settle for 3 place this time. Not bad for a new truck having now idea how to get the balance working.

These are still pretty cool trucks. I wish they'd allow us to pull single axle trucks here in the states. Is the Volvo in the same class your Scania is?

I'm guessing you don't inject water on the Scania with the flame coming out of the stacks. What causes this? Lean air to fuel mixture? In my friends Cummins KTA he gets a flame out of the stack but I think that's due to the timing being retarded so far on the engine.

The Volvo is a Hobby sport class and they have an inlet restrictor of 70mm on the compressor intake combined with the air shutter. See picture. Also the RPM is restricted to 2500Rpm.

The Scania is a Super Sport truck. Yes singe axel but half tractor half semi and some say it’s not a truck. Super sport has max 2900Rpm and max Two turbo in parallel and diesel fuel only and NO water injection.
The flames on the stack are both from oxygen starvation and a bit to retarded end of injection but it dos not hurt the turbo’s and want max power out of this engine.

Difference between super sport and supertruck are RPM limitation and compound turbo set-up. We do not have a supertruck competition.

4 out of 8 conn rods bent on the Scania V8 Semi Puller. New stronger ones are on there way and for now reduce some fuel timing to keep the engine alive.

The idea of retarding fuel timing did not work. Still bending conn rods and even get the idea getting more power from the engine as we got more boost lower AFR and the engine dos not want to go down in RPM even when the track provides a lot of traction.

We did run for save a get 3 place and first podium this year so we are happy but unable to make progress on engine power without problems but new stronger conn rods are build.

It looks with the Hobby Sport Volvo Ny Titan we are setting a new standard with 4 wins out of 5 pulling evens now in a 30 point lead in the championship. It’s hard for me to say but it looks this Volvo D16G engine is a better base for a pulling engine compared to the Scania V8 but you never know until you run it in a Super Sport configuration.
