Pilot Injection!! Can it be turned off??? Anyone know?

BTW folks....

I did test the PPE tuner with lite timing and the Rattle / Clatter / Pinging
STILL remains....Especially when its hot....and now that its getting warming it seems to be getting worse....So the Smarty is not the cause!! I didn't think it was anyway...

I've tried MANY settings on the Smarty and the other tuner and I've tried it in stock form....It's still doing it!

Gonna try the thinner injector washers on Weds. and see if it does anything at all..Providing that they'll seal up properly with the crossover tubes..

It was never likely to be a programmer issue when you change the hardware to the extream you and other have. However, the programmer can "fix it" should they write software to tackle the change in hardware!!!

My question is, and it will never be answered I'm sure; The smarty sponsored trucks, the folks that get special attention from Marco when he visits every year. Do they have lowered compression and do they rattle?

I know the answer, there is a clause in the sponsor contract that says "JasonCzerak is not to be told anything he wants to know and any time a file is sent to him no matter the Internet tube it is sent on something random will get changed to mess with his head, (We think its funny and need to amsused). Violation of this clause results in Internet "Fail""

The story of my life. ;-)

Hey Dave, how's the spoolup on your turbo setup? I see you've got the same top turbo as me, 62/71/13SS...well, I was having some spoolup problems and having a LONG/LOUD rattle at take off, so i pulled my turbos. We opened up the inspection cover on the top turbo to look at the wastegate pucks/flapper. Well, the arm was bent forward, increasing the throw of the pucks, so they were actually hitting the housing and not closing all the way.

I brought it down to HTT and they said they had a design flaw in that arm on some of their earlier turbos due to the heat making the arm bend. You may have a newer one and this might not apply to you. But if your spoolup wasn't pretty damn quick, then that might be worth it to check it out. After I re-installed the turbos, the rattle went down considerably! I also noticed when I put my torque management on moderate, I noticed the rattle increase a little bit compared to the stock torque management.

Well, funny you should mention it!! My spool is definately slower that I think is should be...I just assume it's because of the insane timing my truck has with this rattle / clatter....If I can reduce the timing a bit I feel like it'll spool better!!

But, the problem you mentioned is a concern now....Did HTT warranty that problem?? Should I contact them about this??

I called HTT and they have a new batch coming in this week.

Look at the actuator, and the level is moves, it should be at a 90 degree angle. if it's pulled toward the actuator, then it's broke.

So, yes they'll cover it???

I'll check it out later..On duty now...

Thanks

Yah, they covered it, saying it was a design flaw. It wasn't like it just broke all of a sudden. It looks like over time that arm just continued to bend so the problem got worse the more I drove, so I really didn't notice how bad it was til I put the bigger injectors on and it was taking forever to spool. Who knows how long I've been driving around trying to spool my S400 (74mm wheel) without the help of the top turbo! :bang

I just took a look at my twins, and it looks like if you took the cold pipe off you could access the inspection cover. The way it's angled, you might be able to see in there if you took the passenger wheel well liner out. Unscrew Nathan's wastegate adjuster which should make the wastegate closed completely and take a peek and see if the pucks are closing completely.

FYI: I've found that Nathan's wastegate screw works best at about 1 full revolution out from being fully closed. Screw that bolt in just til the point where it is fully closed and it doesn't move when you press on it. Then back it out one revolution.

I know this isn't going to fix the overall rattle but hopefully it can lessen it to the point where you feel comfortable driving it!

Thanks for the advice on the fix / check!!

But, as far as the rattle goes..My rattle can't be coming from the turbo...First off it's done it from Jump Street!!! First few feet of pavement it hit , it crackled from timing and the pilot injection being so large!!!

Thanks again man!! I'll check it out!!

I didn't mean that the rattle was coming from the turbo, just that mine seems to go away as soon as boost comes up, so the quicker the chargers start spooling the better. Was hoping maybe adjusting Nathan's wastegate would help some (if you didn't already have it dialed in) and also if the gate wasn't closing all the way (my problem) that would contribute to longer rattle time. Just trying to eliminate all other possibilities.

Oh ok! My bad!!

Your right on the faster spoll / faster rattle goes away!!
I need to check my truck out on that turbo deal...Will have to wait till Wed when I'm off though....

Just got my other boost gauge set up so I'll be doing some tweaking there too...It's close already though!!! I'm seeing about 32-36 psi from the 480 at WOT.....

thx
