Please help me my motor is knocking

i feel ur pain man! spun a rod bearing tuesday night, im going to kentucky to pick up another engine and just parting my old one out. good luck man.

Im on cf College station roll call regularly lol im the 4th main poster ive got plenty of friends around here i live with justin price i think were gonna drop the pan the next pretty day we have. I didnt make a thread on cf cause i know there just a bunch of idiots lol i really only get on there for parts and texas section

But on another note i greatly appreciate your input and i would like you all to know that im very pleased that you all have came to my aid. It would be very tough for me to deal with this problem if i didnt have people like yall to guide me through this. I'm just the kinda guy that believes in givin credit where credit is due LOL

how long would it take for something to show up in an oil analysis if you have a spun bearing etc?

if you dont want to pull the pan yet, maybe send an oil sample out to be tested.

That might be cost prohibitive..... I'm sure an oil analysis would cost more than a case of beer, 3 gallons of oil, and a new pan gasket.

Still aint worked on it the weather is still bad and i gotta go to the dyno tomorrow lol!

oil reports dont' take long at all IMO, but you shouldn't be driving on a knocking engine...

Anna pegged it IMO... bottom end knock is a rod bearing 99.9% of the time

you could always cut the filter open, faster, and cheaper then oil analysis. and will answer your question definitively

LOL I didnt mean I was takin my truck.

Got the bumper and grill guard off,the intercooler is ready to fall out but im gonna wait till tomorrow to drop fluids

That's cute, Ethan. :hehe:

Ok guys just an update, the head is off and i pulled the valves everything looked fine to me but I'm not sure what exactly I'm looking for I will add though that when i was loosening the head bolts it was like there was pressure built up inside of them and I saw some coolant on a few, one of them was actually rusted. I pulled the coolant line that runs into the head and whenever I pulled the bolt closest to it it shot coolant out of the fitting. I inspected the head gasket and I did not see anything wrong with it. the valves all look fine as well as the push rods although there is some buildup on the valves I can take some pictures if yall believe it will help. I am still in need of direction I don't have any clue what I'm lookin for guys
Thanks
Ethan
Did you drain the coolant first?

Should have been the first thing done. Good advice.

I'm confused? Easily done I'll add, but didn't you say that you already had the head off earlier?

The head is off but its still full of coolant and oil

Gotta remember I'm learnin as i go folks

Also snedge I was plannin on calling you tomorrow to order some stuff do I need to ask for you or just call up there?

We turned the motor over and rechecked the cylinders, the bottom of #6 is damaged/scored from what I can feel, the section of the cylinder that is rough is approx 1/2'' wide and 1'' tall. I dont know much about honing/boring ect. Or if the damage can be honed or anything. And you are correct, the coolant/oil should have been checked before the head was pulled. Now we are thinking maybe a stuck ring? Or a oil "spitter" (not sure what they are called), but I would think that if it was oil related that the entire cylinder would be mildly scored, I am wondering if the lower section of the piston is damaged?

Is the engine still in the truck? If you are "checking" a cylinder out, you should have the piston out. You're not going to tear down a cummins with the engine still in the truck, except maybe in a pawpaw dodge. I know that the idea of pulling an engine is daunting, but, wouldn't you rather do it right, instead of taking chances and having to pull it later when even more stuff is screwed up.

If you spin a rod bearing, or twist a rod, it's going to case the piston to be imbalanced in the cylinder. The scarring could simply be from the skirt hitting it or something.

My advice is still the same, pull the oil pan off and check the rods. Or, pull the whole engine, because if you have to replace a rob or bearings, it's gonna need to come out anyways.

The engine is coming out. With #6 at bottom dead center you can feel some scoring on the cylinder in one spot. It's not everywhere in the cylinder just in one specific spot. Leads me to believe it has a cracked piston skirt.

All I have left is dropping the tranny and I'll have a short block in the garage tomorrow. Pics and updates are sure to follow

Had a buddies truck do the same thing. Oil squirters were pluged for #5 and #6 pistons. Make sure they are not pluged when you pull it. That sucks.

I had said that too but the fact that it is only scored in a particular spot leads me to believe cracked piston skirt. We'll know soon enough. How do you check to see whether the oil ports are plugged or not?
