Ram50

Dad thinks he got a dud because it's only lasted technically one pass

This is true that it lasted one pass before developing issues. I'm unsure about the dud part. I could have scraped or bent one of the fins causing the turbo to be out of balance. I'm always careful when re-assembling, but, you just don't know sometimes. The dang 1.25AR exhaust housing fits extremely tight around the center piece. So tight, in fact, it had to be hammered on.
The new 1.00 just falls on the center piece.

We are going to run it down to Charleston, WV today and have it rebuilt and rebalanced.

We need to be together for this weekends Antrim Diesel Days at Mason Dixon Dragway in MD.

flutering I think you are talking about is possibly surge

I'm not sure what to call it, but, I'm pretty sure its not surge. We listened to VMax's surge and ours is nothing like that. You know that barking sound when you let off suddenly. Well, I think this is happening to our turbo while under power. Once it starts, at first I could fuel through it. Now, when you get to 20psi of boost, it starts and does not stop until you back out of it.

Yes, that would be compressor surge, it destroys turbos in a hurry.
All my experience with it is in small gas engines running hybrid turbos, huge compressor wheels and tiny turbine wheels and housings to get em to spool. Sometimes you could power through it, sometimes you couldnt.

If you can map your engines airflow, you will see you are running far left of the surge line on the compressor map, and it can happen for a myriad of reasons, most of being a lot of turbo rpm, and not enough airflow, so it chokes, then unloads, the chokes again.

That turbo barking sound is a very slow version, when you jump off the throttle, of what is happening under power.

A larger turbine wheel or housing or both will fix it. Or smaller compressor.

With that big of a compressor wheel I hope it's 96.

One of these days I'll learn to listen to you Mr. Sting.

Thanks crackerman. I truly have no idea. However, hearing the same answer from you and sting, I'm going to have to go with the larger turbine wheel.

I figured the boost force was overcoming the drive force. Therefore, I figured the smaller compressor housing would reduce the amount of exhaust energy getting past the turbine wheel. Apparently, this is incorrect. A step up to a 96 seems extreme, but, I don't think an in between turbine is available???

I'll make some calls today and hopefully be able to get things here in time for Antrim Diesel Days.

Thanks again fellas.

Turbo

I'm no turbo expert like some people here but I have had a turbo or twenty on my motor. lol I have learned a lot from Brayden and Chase at Fleece Performance on turbo's. There is a 92 turbine but if it was me I would go to a 96. There is more power on the exhaust side sometimes than there is on the compressor side. Think of it as a bigger breaker bar turning the the compressor side.

lol, yea I sorta had that much figured out and I figured the smaller exhaust housing would give the exhaust turbine more force. Instead, it just made things worse.

I have a feeling the more the thing surged the more damage was done to the bushings which further compounded the problem.

I'm just hoping at this point I can get the correct parts by Friday.

We are thinking about hitting that 'Alex Scudder' dirt drag. I have an extra set of scoops if you think you might want to bolt them on the dragster and make some passes. lol

Very nice build and that is a bad ass little truck! I was thinking your front end was going to be a tooth pick in the begining and then you switched it out for your current one. It sure looks a lot more beefy than that d30. I really like the simplicity and universality your truck has. I also think it's awesome the whole family has gotten involved and are all diesel heads too! Feels right at home. Great job and good luck with it!

Told you that you would figure it out.

lol, sure. Just like everything else on this truck that compd subscribers figured out for me.

Thanks DieselWrencher. We watched videos of your vette long before we decided to tackle the ram50. You were inspirational to us. Yea, I can't imagine doing this stuff without the family. We are no where near the professional level, yet it seems this little truck eats up most of our spare time. I have really enjoyed the time spent together on the truck and look forward to quicker et's next year.

I'd like to up the game too, but with 3 kids now, it's tough. I'm trying to decide if I want to build a tube chassis unit, or just redo parts of mine so I can cut weight and gain a little more room. I'm afraid the tube chassis new build may be the way to go.

Before you go to the trouble and expense of building a chassis, you might want to look around for a used unit.

We like to build our own stuff and the way Bodacious is put together suits us. If I were to go full tube chassis, I would probably by a used unit and modify it enough to say it's mine. lol

I need to do some catching up on the build thread.

We made it to Antrim Diesel days. One plugged fuel filter on the '09 and a broken main leaf on the trailer, but, we made it.

Big time thanks go out to Dale at Mt. Diesel for coming up with not one but two turbos and in plenty of time to test before loading up.

He sent back the S482 that was surging only now it has a 74.?? compressor wheel. This ended up being the best of the two he sent for my application.

The second turbo is an S475 75/96 with a T-6 1.32 housing. Thanks to Philip Price at Antrim Diesel for quickly setting me up with a 1.0 T-4 housing for this turbo. This turbo seemed a bit more laggy and didn't run quite as well on top. That is at least to 4000rpms. After testing both turbos, I realized something else must be wrong to only get to 4k rpms. I finally got the stupid out of me and checked my fuel filter. The aeromotive 10 micron filter was smashed shut.:bang

We ran two time trials and made it to the second round of eliminations when we met up with one really quick second gen. We certainly need to rethink our rear suspension set up. I'm thinking double adjustable shocks to keep the rebound down to nothing.

We made it out to the Alex Scudder Lee Hill dirt drags. We met some super fine folks and had a great time even though we only made one pass.

Some fella that goes by the name of ShortBusDriver on here showed up and we got to see his first pass. He is certainly making lots of power!!!

If you listen closely, you can hear the converter actually lock up just after the launch. You can hear a little screech and the engine pulls down.

After this pass, the converter would only stall to about 800rpm and then lock up. If I could have gotten it to spool, it would have been great. I sorta wanted to make one more attempt and I knew the glide was coming out this winter anyways so I went out and neutral dropped it. The glide didn't like it so well.

She is cleaned up and back in the garage. We ordered four used STORM short blocks from a fella up in PA. Looks like she'll remain cummins powered for next season as the BMW idea was voted out. I'm still going to be looking for a cheap wreck and get one snatched up. I may have gotten voted out this year, however, you just never know.

What were the 60ft times on those passes? Looked like it jumped out of the hole pretty good!

IIRC our best 60ft. Was a 1.43 but I need to find the slips before I can remember for sure.
