Real world benefits from cam swap..

Stick with the charger you have for now.

Get a pressure box like the one we used on the dyno, and see where you're at after the cam swap.

I think you could make 700 with the special, and still tune it down and tow with it.

I replied to your pm with what I'd suggest now. If you want to try to do this, although I agree with the others in this thread about twin recommendations, plan to run the tightest exhaust housing that can be had (you may need to pick up a phone there are tighter options than a .9 for s400 i'm pretty sure) an an external gate. If I was to keep my s468 i would swap on a tighter t3 housing and gate the pee out of it. Also, the volute closing quick spool plates would be worth looking into for you. The group that made mine (the one I sold) has split up and considering re-starting production but with some changes. Engineered Diesel is working on one as well I think but they are swamped so hard to tell just when their's will be available.

Above this consider your converter (if you're an auto) and gears.

All in all 3500 for twins will not seem like much after you've invested in all these things to make the single work, atleast given the current technology on the market today.

good luck

Nick

without a doubt my cam made a huge difference - much faster spoolup, better drivability, and less smoke around town

Only thing i may do is retard it a few degres over the winter for more top end power

Just because you are making 700+ on the dyno does not say you are going to try and tow at that level. I think your problem will be the 5500 foot elevation, it is going to kill any spooling of a larger turbo. You and I have the super b special and I know when I get up over 2000 feet I can see, hear and feel the difference already and that isn't towing. I think the biggest you are going to get away with is the A5K.

Hit the nail on the head Joe...Im not going to be pulling at 700hp at 5500ft, just want to make 700 at sea level and obviously de-tune for elevation.

I think your right JP, the Special has worked VERY well for me and others, and I still have room for more with it. A good cam and GOOD pressure box should net me the power I desire...if not then I might have to step up the injector size a little.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't.

Last time I taslked to said individual...he was running without it for a pass or two then "Give it HELL"!!!!:tree:

start a poll!... this debate is almost as old as diesel themselves, but looking to the future...cam and TWINS... wheres the downside or doing the cheaper thing now?

Funny how this all comes about, I've got a friend that wants to dyno to get a baseline before a cam swap on a 12v. I'll see if I can get him on the rollers this weekend.

Les, he should be there on fuel only so we'll see.

All the big cam companies and no back to back runs to proove a cam is worth wile ? They should be the ones doing the testing not letting it up to a customer to find out he gained almost nothing, after spending the money on a cam and valve springs and the price of an install.

x2

I installed a Maxspool in a buddies truck we did a very mild build on...neither of us were impressed with it. Not bashing Greg, but the cam doesn't live up to the hype

timebomb- just do a search, there is a lot more

WHY????.....
When the true numbers from a stock cam to a big company aftermarket cam have been seen by many out here already. Not enough power or torque gain nor enough swing in the places the power/tq is made to equal the costs.

In my truck, the cam has meant ZERO for power and two years of friggin headaches until we finally got to what the true issue was.I should have saved the money wasted on a cam and bought a set of twins,I would have been alot further along in my project and saved a ton of money instead of chasing ghosts.

Maybe a bigtime roller cam may make a difference for those who seek power up in the RPM band which would rival the space shuttle orbit. The average daily driver/weekend funseeker would not gain enough from a cam swap to offset the cost of the cam and the install.

Buy the twins, you'll be better off..........Andy

Hammer, It sounds like you did not read all of the references I posted. And if I may ask, which cam do you have? Not trying to kick up the dust just wandering.

My cam is stock, I have not seen a vp truck hold powerband like my truck does with any cam. I have to say that I agree to a point.

There's no question that a well-engineered aftermarket cam is beneficial - but how much $$$ is that step in the right direction worth?

The answer is a subjective decision made by each individual...

Zach, do you have any dyno sheets for 12v trucks going from a stock cam to one of yours, no other changes?
Thanks
Brett

One of the smartest posts in this thread.

I know people that say their cam is the best mod they did on their trucks. And I'm talking daily drivers here.

I will have to dig through some of my old dyno sheets. I will try to post those up sometime. Lately most of the dyno comparisons have to do with the CR since it is the most popular engine being modded and since they are the easiest to tune.

x3 Les spend money on twins. I dont know if you will be paying to do a cam or what but I wouldn't do it again. Its not worth it imo.
