Real world benefits from cam swap..

I will have to dig through some of my old dyno sheets. I will try to post those up sometime. Lately most of the dyno comparisons have to do with the CR since it is the most popular engine being modded and since they are the easiest to tune.

Zach

Thank you, I'm gonna run a truck on the dyno tomorrow for a baseline. He's gonna swap cams this week and I'll Dyno it again. Not sure who's cam he's using, but if it's your's I'll send you the results.

Les-

If your willing to wait, I plan on putting my truck on the dyno at Garmons this Nov and then Swole going to install a cam for me and then where going to see where we are at. I'm debaiting going up to a 66, and port and polishing the heads, but we'll see the damn moneytree is out of season.

If I ever buy another truck I'll buy a cam for it. For me it was definitely worth the money. My truck is so much nicer to drive. The thing the cam really helped with mine is daily driving. 3.54 gears, 35" tires, tight auto, big exhaust wheel, not exactly a spool happy setup. The cam made the turbo much nicer around town and on the highway.

As shown on the dtr website, a test done on a dyno. Same dyno, same truck, same day and same operator under the same programming.

this is a "aftermarket cam" against a stock one.

stock cam was the lower tq cam reading on the chart. I am not disclosing the name of the aftermarket cam cause I do not get into the childish bs in these cam war threads. If I mention who's it was they wouldn't be able to suck it up and accept it.

I will say since most know I am a dealer for f1 that it was not an f1 cam. It was a cam that was supplied by the owner of the truck. If the owner of the truck wants to disclose it, he can.

Posting dyno sheets and not saying what cam was used is not exactly "not getting into the childish bs" if you ask me...

Nice plug for F1 BTW:D:poke:

Thread was titled "real world benefits" and did not specify a brand. He was just looking for feedback in general. Not saying the name and specs being childish? Hardly.. I have been around long enough to know how people defend there products.

So, I mention the name and specs of the cam, then what? I BS fest erupts that I have no time for. As I stated, if the owner wants to reveal it he can.

I know what you mean, I just feel like playing Devil's advocate tonight...

I just find it odd that some say that their cam is one of the best mods they have ever done for driveability, and some see no benefit.

But maybe there is a common thread (or part:D) to the guys that aren't impressed...

I know exactly what you mean. I think a cam can be a very good thing for people who actually use the power, be it towing, sled pulling or racing. I also have had people that have told me that with this particular cam they light their turbo by 1500 rpm and it's off like a rocket. I can tell you I drove the test truck home and thought that it did spool the turbo nicely, but it definitely did not spool it like the other person described. Still much better than stock.

Lmills, that's the exact response I expected.
Not trying to piss anyone off, but a lot of people have asked for before and after testing and not too many have offered unbiased results. Sure, the designers and seller's will show you a graph, but it always leave the mind to wander. I had nothing to gain or lose by doing the before and after test. I do not sell the line up of cams. Personally, I could careless who's cam it was. The bottom line is if the owner is happy with it.

Still doesn't explain why I've talked to a number of guys that love their cams daily driving. Not really using the power, or pushing their trucks. I'm talking about guys in the 500-600 range that daily drive their trucks. There are to many guys that say it makes the turbo much nicer to drive with for me to believe it's a placebo effect. And the fact that these are not guys towing/pulling/racing, just in the context of daily driving a fairly hot truck around town...

Without that info the sheet may as well have been drawn with crayons.

And with the cam makers name it actually becomes useful advice.

So... if I suddenly gave you 60-80 ft lbs of tq in the midrange you would not be able to feel it and think the truck runs better? After all, that is where the motors are run most of the time.. That is after all exactly what the sheet shows.

this is good to see some real world results! i wish i could have done a cam in my truck when i had it apart last winter, but i just didn't have the money, but i would be happy with that dyno sheet. oh and i know what cam it is!..... i got to hold it before it went in the customers truck. i hope you cust. is pleased Lloyd, i would be!

Hammer, It sounds like you did not read all of the references I posted. And if I may ask, which cam do you have? Not trying to kick up the dust just wandering.........Zach

Why read them,to me its all hype,BS and internet sales pitches.

The camshaft in my truck was installed long before you and a few of the others were even dreaming about doing Cummins camshafts. The shop who did the work back then is a established shop in the Midwest who specializes in pulling units and their work is well known. The cam was their own design and was ground by Cam Craft in who used to be located in Easton,MD.

I also have before and after dyno sheets to show it made little or no difference in my truck which was exactly what I was told long ago by someone who spent a career educating people on the B series Cummins. To be exact when I first chatted with him about the cam I was told "Unless you go to a big roller spec'd for big rpm's you will see and gain little except for a lighter load in your wallet.Spend your money on twins and you'll be further ahead.".I didn't and now I know why he told me what he did and know I would have been alot futher ahead with a twins purchase instead of a cam......Andy

When i put the cam in my truck it did very little but everylittle bit counts. I bought the cam used so it was worth it in the end. now when i did a cam and a pulse flow exhaust header toghether the amount they helped spool up was worth every penny

Hmmm..... that kinda looks familiar!!!! Bet I know who's truck and cam it is !!!:Cheer:

Oh and the owner is pleased with the results, for the money he has in the cam and install....... he is pleased. Hasnt had much time with the truck so hasnt got much feed back yet........
