Replacing the 6.4 with a 24v Cummins???

Id put a cr cummins in it and not worry about pulling it back apart...6.4 are a pain in the ass to work on and they are more $ plain simple! hp an be had pretty equaly.... all you guys that are saying a programmer and thats it you must have forgot about the first 30000 you spent for the truck.. I thnk $ to $ cr cummins is the way to go. stock motor to stock motor the cr cummins will hold its own.. I made 934 with stock bottem end.. stock cam made 880. that was with a single 475.... these big hp fords are simply spraying the sack of there truck.. let me know how it runs in 2-3 years!

How many 6.4s have you worked on? - thanks....I will agree 5.9 ftw when it comes to turning a wrench though..

6.4 trucks can be had much cheaper than 30gs brah....

all stock internals with JUST headstuds made over 1,000hp on a few 6.4s now......without spray - come on we arnt talking 7.3 lingo anymore.

2-3 years.....wasnt your "stock" bottem end the topic of discussion the other day? Bent rods?

haters gonna hate!

bent rods... that would be a shop taking a kid who knows nothing about the truck and saying hey give me your credit card your truck has bent rods because they are stock and thats more hp then my built bottem end made...lol they werent bent when I pulled the head last time before i sold it. your first sentence makes you sound dumb?? you agreeing to disagree?? take my name out of your sig. if I dont know what im talking about :) 6.4ftw. I love those trucks everytime im in yours makes me want one more but they are just a pita to work on.. ive watched u tinker with yours... im like f that! oh.. concrete is poured lift should be in friday...

This thread is actually kinda funny. I really get a kick out of the posts about how much easier a cummins is to work on... Really? It isnt much easier, let me tell you. I love my cummins, but really the 6.4 is getting a bad rap for no reason. Unless you are pulling the heads you have no reason to pull the cab, and getting at things isnt as bad as they look.

They guys that are making big HP with the 6.4 are finding them to be quite reliable.

It is true that the big weakness of the 6.4 is the head design, so that being said, it is amazing the amount of HP that you can get out of a 6.4 with a poorly designed head. I cant wait to see how Mike Dillehays truck goes with the new heads he had built.

As for the truck without an engine behind the ford shop,,, drive behind a dodge dealership, or a chev dealership,,, same picture different truck. They all fail. And usually it is stupidity that causes them to fail... up here alot of them get dusted out, guys change to a afe or the like, dont oil thier filters, or dont get them on correctly (happens way more than you would think) and boom there goes an engine. The other big culprit is bad fuel. Probably the biggest culprit for failed engines etc. Diesel engines do not handle bad fuel well. 25k fuel pressure will make a tiny bit of dust, or a drop of water look like a ramming ball. I always preach proper fuel filtration,, but not too many guys listen,, its a cost that dosent add HP so most just over look it.

As for CP3's failing,, it happens,, about as often as a CP4.

wonder how hard it is to change the bottom alt on the 6.4? or the ac compressor. or even the alt belt which is in the back of everything which means the whole front of the motor has to come off to change those simple things. thats what i hate about the ford motors now days. just a pita to fix simple stuff. but like i said, the 6.4s are making some serious power and are by far the cheapest motor to get to 600rwhp. just a pita to work on in my eyes. even a turbo swap on a dodge can be done in 30 minutes.

Some things are not as easy,, but really, in the life of a truck, how often do you change an altenator? once maybe,, samething with a ac pump... (that being said, you can change them both pretty easy from underneath) To change a turbo in half an hour you have to be humping,, LOL. I doubt it would take too much longer to do a simple swap of turbos on a 6.4,, they are right there on the top, nice and easy to get too...

Please dont get me wrong, my race truck is a cummins, and always will be. I have deep respect for the cummins power plant. I just want to make sure people understand what a 6.4 is all about before they make blanket statements about that engine. It is truely a good engine.

In the last 9 years I have owned a Dodge, Chev and a Ford, all diesels. I have worked on, and worked all 3 of them. I still own the dodge and the ford. The Ford (which 3 years ago you would have never heard me say for the life of me) is the best truck I have ever owned, smooth, amazing power, trouble free. The Chev was really the worst of the 3, very poor quality control at chev these days (IMHO) it had good power, and the alison tranny did work good for towing, but it was basically week other than that. I had to do 2 wheel alignments in 90k miles.. seats cracked in 50k miles, just stupid stuff... the dodge was a good truck too, weak spot the tranny... and the rough ride in comparison to the other 2

Oh I am not knocking the 6.4 they are pretty bad ass but was just implying when you actually do have to work on it dodge is by far easier

For 10 seconds on the dyno, with lots of smoke and sky high EGTs. Big deal. What the hell good is that ? Its a dyno queen.

If you want to make a 1000 reliable HP, you need twins with an S480 or S510 primary. 80 PSI of boost, properly cooled too. How is your 6.4 going to hold up to 80 PSI of boost ?

There is a reason the big power truck pullers use Cummins.

Actually you are wrong, the truck is a dd and going down the track barely sees 1500deg, get your story straight before you talk, the truck has over 10k on this setup. The truck is seeing 75 psi max, lets get a run with a 1000hp single charger cr vs this truck, should be a good race

To add, that's with stock valve springs, pushrods and everything. Give us a few years and see what will come out for the 6.4's, its only the beginning

75 PSI on a S400-472 ? Wow, who needs twins !

I could give a d@mn about which truck is faster. I'm building a DD/ tow pig. I want towing power, I want fuel economy, I want it to last forever and I want to be able to fix it myself when it breaks.

BTW, it was 23.5 shop hours to diagnose the HPFP problem on my truck, pull it, replace it, replace the injectors and fix a few other things that were wrong. The work order is 4 pages long.

I'm done with 6.4s.

Lol 6.9 is a LONG way from the 9.6 it's says it ran

Edit- just poking some fun. Truck runs very very well. Not to many 10sec dd trucks out there

Lol thanks man, and me2, that was on a s475, the whole issue seems to be with your dealer, it doesnt take near that much time to diagnose something like that, sorry about your luck, and good luck with the swap.

wait lol that was a 1/8 track lol. not 1/4. no way in hell you ran a 6.9 in the 1/8 lol. sorry but i gotta bust your balls a little bit.

I have already seen what comes out. It's called the connecting rods....

I agree with both sides and have owned both a CR cummins and now a 6.4 powerstroke. I have also spent 10 hours changeing both alternators both tensioners and both belts and they are a PITA to work on but I love the room in the cab and how quiet the cab is so there is a trade off with everything. But the fuel millage of the CR Cummins compaired to the Powerstroke is no camparision my 04.5 was always around 18-20 and the best I have ever done with the 6.4 is 17.

Got a 08 6.4 we've had the cab off, did studs, valve springs, ported rails, waste gate, batmowheel upgrade and h&s tuning and other mods but we keep having small issues with it. Customer gettin tired of it so just found this thread to see if the cr would be a good option. 06/07 cr with efi tuning i think would b a awsome combo. How much cost we lookin at and how much is his motor worth with 62k on it?
