I searched with no luck. It says that I have to machine my rockers before droping in my arp studs. Before I spend the money do you realy have to get the rockers machined or will they work just fine with out the machine work?

here is what our machine shop does to them. If you dont do it you will bust the valve covers do to clearance issues

I call BS on that, I posted a thread about this like a week ago, 3+ pages.

anyways... the general consensus was, its good to bottom tap, but probably not 100% nessesary, if you bottom tap, the rockers will need to be machined, if you do not bottom tap, they probably wont need to be machined, but you will need to grind the webbing on the valve covers.

My studs come today, I'll throw them in tonight probably, and let you know

If it was me and my truck I would bottom tap and machine the rockers. Or you could just do like a guy in the Baltimore area and drill a hole in your valve covers to allow the stud to come through.

Even tho drilling a hole in my valve covers is tempting my oil leak is big enough, ill pass. LOL I will just do it the right way buy getting them machined and bottoming them out. Thanks alot guys.

I really dont see how bottom tapping a hole thats 10 inches down from the top of the head is considered easy, seems like a PITA of a job to do it with the head on.

Unless you want to make installing headstuds a day long project.

It's really not too bad. I just carefully welded a 11/32 quarter inch drive socket to the top of the tap and used extensions and a ratchet to do it.

If I remember right arp studs need rocker stands machined and a1 tech studs just need some webing ground out of valve cover

thats correct

I suppose if a person really wanted to drill holes in the valve covers you could install breathers in place of the holes.

Tapping the holes doesn't dictate whether you machine the pedestals or not. If you don't machine the pedestal, you're going to have the same thread engagement whether the hole has been tapped or not. It will just be cleaner if its been tapped.

Take the rocker pedestal off, then its like tapping the rest of the holes on the top of the head.

yeah, your right but thats still a ways down, i like to be about to thread a tap in by hand then start turning, sometimes a sharp tap can chew those first thread without you knowing it.

Thanks alot guys im getting my rockers machined. If your Gona do it do it right.

If your Gona do it do it right....

....do it like everyone else says to do it .....?...... isnt that how it goes on forums?

I'm throwing my studs in this afternoon, i'll coat the threads with grease, thread one in, then pull it out, if there is full thread engagement the bottoming is 100% useless.

if not, then yep, its definently a good idea to bottom them and mill the rockers.

Make sure you check the holes with the dowels in them, since the threads do not extend up as far.

Order a pulley tap, they are 6" long and reach the bottom without a problem with the head on. If you don't have time to do it right the first time, when are you going to have time to do it right?

hey

Since we are already on the subject. I have the pattern on witch bolts to tighten in order. What do you torque ur studs to the first time second time and final torque. Would be much appreciated.
