Whats the Best fix for this?? Small Freeze Plugs??

you're right but another point I was trying to make is, you thread those plugs, you're just about guaranteed to blow out some where else.

It seems there's a need for a better water pump. Possibly running a cooler T stat too.

OMG,..I think I'll ill!!!

Alot of guys have had those "soft" plugs threaded before so they don't have that problem... I think there are 11 of them. Member OT-OF-HERE had that same problem... he didn't catch it in time though. Personally I would thread them and never worry about them again... OR put a coolant bypass, if you don't have one already

This brings back terrible memories.

I can tell you that you will need a complete tear down. Every bearing will need replaced including your turbos will need new cartridges. Your Intercooler and Radiator will both need to be boiled out as they will both have contamination. Don't forget your cam bearings. My trust washer on the crank was history so the crank and rods also had to be turned 10/10. The cylinders where the plugs blew they were able to clean up the piston skirts but they had scoring.

After you tear it down and somebody tells you that a little flush will take care of everything,.. you'll know how much crap that is.

I'm sorry for you dude and can definitely tell you,.. been there.

I had my soft plugs replaced with threaded plugs as you are much better off having an external plug blow that at least doesn't contaminate every freakin' thing in the engine like these soft plugs do. Terrible design IMO.

I tell ya,.. if I knew then what I know now I'd be searching for another engine with low mileage if I were you. I found a year later I could have had a NEW one for what I paid for all the work I ended up having done and the parts were huge cost. Wait till you see the difference in stock bearings for instance vs 10/10. Unreal!

I gotta go,..I'm sick!!! :bang:bang:bang

Swole,

I noticed that WickedDiesels has a coolant by pass that reverts the water back into the thermostat housing.

Swole, dad told me to tell you forget opie. Get a freeze plug plate from Garret at Pure Diesel Power plum it into the return line on the heater hose, wack about 100 thousands off the tips of the water pump impeller and it warms up better now then it ever did.

Man!!! How long was your truck run like that?? I DANG sure how I can just flush it out several times and be ok...

I just ran it down the return road and to the truck...Had it towed and been off ever since......I'm gonna chance it with just several flushes...

Hmmm....Never heard of doing this...

Which Plug do you replace?? The one on the back??

:bang Wonder what those plugs are made out of ? Will they atleast blow in your ear when you purchase that kit?*bdh*

Can you make the kit cheaper?? I need one soon and don't have time to do all the leg work to measure and put it together...

Just measure the hole and go get a tap and some plugs.....should be around $50 for all of it......maybe somebody knows what size tap you need??

I used the block off plate for the rear coolant plug (after I blew mine out) then removed the pipe plug on the top of the head between #5 and #6 cylinders and put a pop off valve in there set at around 35 lbs, ran heater hose up to the thermostat housing. Just drilled and tapped it for 1/2" pipe. Turned out pretty nice for just throwing it together...

Interesting!!!

Pics????

The one on the very back of the block. Plate already comes drilled and tapped, some hose and fittings and your good to go

ONE single run. They took my s06 Smarty and changed my tune on it to the 3500 rpm tune and took the truck out on ONE single run to 3500 rpms while the engine was cold and Voila!! "F'd" up my engine and everything you read about. ONE single run!!! A Cummins engineer told me those plugs have to heat up during the warm up process,.. they expand and you have a good seal. If you take the truck out and run it balls out with all the stuff I had on the truck when it's cold,.. and mine was cold as they were working on a couple electrical problems without the truck having been running at all,.. then you stand a high probability of blowing those plugs.

That friggin' antifreeze will KILL bearings. When they tore it down antifreeze was throughout the entire engine and turbos/intercooler with oil and antifreeze mixed. The crankcase area was expanded to the entire engine when you have everything pumped into the block. I'm talking nightmarish disaster here.

Dude, That sux balz!!

Well, I ordered the Dr. P threaded plug kit and am gonna installed and Flush it Majorly......If it requires a tear down, then so be it...I'll have to wait and see....

Sorry about your truck though.....

I'd say the T stat not being open didn't help either. Everything the pump had went into those plugs !

Big Swole,

I'm glad we could help ya out, and I will make sure to have Alex make a detour flight out to SDX so he can take care of the ear blowing....:hehe:

Well, some people are just Lazy like me :owned: or work to much like me and just need to get what they need quickly and easily...

It was just worth it to me to get it on the way to fix my truck...I'm on duty and haven't had time to chase down the parts...

Plus MikeD is a heck of a guy!! Made a friend and new contact out of it!!

I see your point though....I just didn't have the time...
