not too long ago... it was me asking the exact same question.
luckily loads of great folks steered me to a 12v. ended up getting a sweet 97 12v with 93k miles, 4x4, club cab, auto for $11,500.
that was 3 years ago.. just sold my faithful 97 CTD for $9250. had people in line to buy it. it had 130k miles with all the maintenance done. KDP killed, front end super solid, new 10ply tires, synthetic fluid in tranny, clutch bands adjusted, new alternator, new brake master cylinder, new brake pads, new belt, cooling system pressure tested with new cap/thermostat/bypass hoses,, etc. etc.
all of above maintenance was done before CTD needed it.
the ONLY reason for selling my 97 CTD was I wanted a 5sp.
looked for a donor truck to do a conversion or another 4x4 CTD 2500, Club cab 5sp and low miles for close to 2 years before finding my 96 CTD 4x4, CC, 5sp with 67k miles. could have easily purchased a 2004.5 CTD (best year CR) with what I paid for my 96 CTD.
for some reason 4x4 CTD with 5sp in 2500 is a relatively rare bird. almost all 12v 4x4 that come up for sale will have an auto. vs 1 ton 12v CTD is fairly common with 5sp. 4x4 in 2500 or 3500 are harder to find.
seems the word is out about 12v being a much better truck. loads of folks are looking for low mileage 12v. vs loads of folks trying to sell their 24 v. look on craigslist... seems there's 15+ 24v for sale for every one 12v.
now I'm starting from scratch again... my 97 CTD had all the bugs worked out and could drive anywhere.
KDP has been taken care of on my 96 CTD... was super nervous until that was done. front end is junk. already replaced the track arm, which reduced the creaks and clunks. but it still clunks and creaks. driving me nuts... next up is replacing all the ball joints and repacking front wheel bearings.
96 CTD is lightly bombed with a TST kit, 5in exhaust, ceramic clutch, guessing 300hp, 650 ft lb. no where near strong as Nick's CTD. be interesting how close my guess is on a dyno.
really like my new 96 CTD 5sp!!!
here's hoping you find your 12v...
