12V or 24V 2nd Gen (My 1st Diesel)

Does anyone have a pictures of what I should look for if it's mounted on the frame rail and where exactly it is?

I know my 01.5 had the pump mounted on the frame rail.....

Chase
Not stock it didn't.

My 02 has a mechanical cam driven pump. Why is that? Oh yeah lol. I went TV shopping over the last week. I stressed and researched until I was blue in the face. At some point you have to say F it and just pull the trigger. Any truck you buy will have strengths and weaknesses. The 24V is not the lemon that some would like to have you believe. If you can afford it get an 03 CR. Separate set of issues but I'd much rather have that truck than any 12V antique.

I bought a 55" Samsung LED. Awesome set!

What's the gas milage difference between 2wd and 4wd, is there a big difference really?

What do you guys think about this truck?

I'm not thrilled about it being an auto with a goose neck, but the price is pretty good, I have not drove it yet. He is interested in a trade for my Jeep.

not too long ago... it was me asking the exact same question.

luckily loads of great folks steered me to a 12v. ended up getting a sweet 97 12v with 93k miles, 4x4, club cab, auto for $11,500.

that was 3 years ago.. just sold my faithful 97 CTD for $9250. had people in line to buy it. it had 130k miles with all the maintenance done. KDP killed, front end super solid, new 10ply tires, synthetic fluid in tranny, clutch bands adjusted, new alternator, new brake master cylinder, new brake pads, new belt, cooling system pressure tested with new cap/thermostat/bypass hoses,, etc. etc.

all of above maintenance was done before CTD needed it.
the ONLY reason for selling my 97 CTD was I wanted a 5sp.

looked for a donor truck to do a conversion or another 4x4 CTD 2500, Club cab 5sp and low miles for close to 2 years before finding my 96 CTD 4x4, CC, 5sp with 67k miles. could have easily purchased a 2004.5 CTD (best year CR) with what I paid for my 96 CTD.

for some reason 4x4 CTD with 5sp in 2500 is a relatively rare bird. almost all 12v 4x4 that come up for sale will have an auto. vs 1 ton 12v CTD is fairly common with 5sp. 4x4 in 2500 or 3500 are harder to find.

seems the word is out about 12v being a much better truck. loads of folks are looking for low mileage 12v. vs loads of folks trying to sell their 24 v. look on craigslist... seems there's 15+ 24v for sale for every one 12v.

now I'm starting from scratch again... my 97 CTD had all the bugs worked out and could drive anywhere.

KDP has been taken care of on my 96 CTD... was super nervous until that was done. front end is junk. already replaced the track arm, which reduced the creaks and clunks. but it still clunks and creaks. driving me nuts... next up is replacing all the ball joints and repacking front wheel bearings.

96 CTD is lightly bombed with a TST kit, 5in exhaust, ceramic clutch, guessing 300hp, 650 ft lb. no where near strong as Nick's CTD. be interesting how close my guess is on a dyno.

really like my new 96 CTD 5sp!!!

here's hoping you find your 12v...

tejas... it's only worth $15k if someone is willing to pay it.
helps that it's the elusive: low mileage 12v, 4x4, 5sp, CC, 2500

for $15k.. 12v should be in like new condition. no cracked dash, new 10ply tires, OEM aluminum wheels, no peeling clear coat, never wrecked, interior with little to no wear, etc.. etc.. etc.

displacedTexan has seen my 96 CTD 4x4 5sp with 67k miles. he can vouch condition is as described above or better.

to get a valid comparison of value.. go test drive a few low mileage 2004.5 (best year CR) CTD 4x4 6sp. that's the bar you need to use.

for $15k.. one can purchase either CTD. so the 12v had better be in mint condition to hope to compare to the 2004.5 CTD.

value wise... 12v will drop faster as you rack up miles, than 2004.5.
so you'd better be planning on keeping the 12v long term.

my choice was go with a low mileage 12v 4x4 5sp... but it could have gone either way. those 2004.5 6sp 4x4 are pretty sweet!

Tejas, probably not worth 15k, but I think I'd give him whatever he wanted for it anyway! Year? And I cant quite make out the mileage.

Go with the 12v! Not just because I own one but they are definately the best bang for the buck!

if you decide to bomb your cummins. a 12v can be easily modded to gain HP/torque at very low costs.

CR have the advantage to being able to switch to a milder driving mode after being bombed.

it's cheaper to purchase a high performance clutch vs building up your auto to hold more HP.

each series has their own weaknesses and strengths.

another reason for my decision to go 12v VS CR is learning curve. many hours spent on my 97 CTD directly applies to my 96.

Thats a lot of smoke for 356hp worth of bang. Hopefully it didn't cost you very much buck. I'd rather have 600hp of 24v smoke free bang but hey that's just me lol.

If you're going to spend money just get a CR. More clean HP than a antique 12v can ever dream of.

Of course CR injectors go out just as often as VP44's, but I doubt anyone here is going to mention that fact.
