12V or 24V 2nd Gen (My 1st Diesel)

some of us is not interested in 600+ hp ... much more interested in mileage and reliability. hands down 12v are the most reliable of all the cummins equipped dodges.

my 96 is lightly bombed to 300hp/650ft lb range. may take it up to 400hp/900ft lb territory. but no plans on going past that.

had my choice between another 12v or 2004.5 CR.
98.5-2002 24v was not even considered.

trick is finding a low mileage 12v... much easier finding a nice 2004.5 CR.

again... each series has their strength and weaknesses. just that for my needs 12v fit best.

Thats a lot of smoke for 356hp worth of bang. Hopefully it didn't cost you very much buck. I'd rather have 600hp of 24v smoke free bang but hey that's just me lol.

If you're going to spend money just get a CR. More clean HP than a antique 12v can ever dream of.

Well school is coming to a close and I've got a couple trucks I'm going to look at. Here is my delima, let me know which one you would go with in my situation.

1. '99 4x4 196,000, auto, trucks in flawless condition, all highway miles back and fourth between LA and south Texas. Had the vp44 and lift pump replaced 2 years ago, truck just sits now but the guy starts it up and lets it run 3 times a week or so. He wants $8000

2. '02, auto 112,000 2002 dodge 4x4 diesel trade???? he said it has a little loose steering, and a couple of little dings on the doors. Replaced VP44 recently, 14,000

The second guy wants to trade my Jeep + cash but the first guy doesn't. Do you think the second one is just way to much for not even being a HO 6 spd. The first guy also said I could just take over the loan for the truck and finish paying it out. So, what would you guys do?

stay away from 98.5 to 2002.. unless you are prepared to install a Fass system and fuel pressure gauge to monitor pressures.

most folks are motivated to sell after spending $2k for a VP44 fuel pump. especially if it's their second or third time.

some folks preferred choice for 24v is to P-pump it.
one thing is for sure... there's some killer deals out there for 98.5-2002 24v cummins trucks.

word has gotten out about VP44 issues, so sellers are having a really hard time selling. look on craigslist... loads of super clean low mileage 24v for dirt cheap. there's 10+ 24v for sale to every one 12v.

when low mileage 12v do come up... they don't last long and will sell for more than newer cummins. 5sp 2500 12v cummins are particularly hard to find. for some reason almost all are auto's. whereas it's easy to find 1 ton 12v with 5sp.

MOST desirable combination for 12v is ... low mileage, 4x4, club cab, 5sp. 98 12v came with short box or long with small rear doors. for those with small children, that would be the ticket.

Well the '99 is sweet, I just hope the bank will come through, getting your idenity stolen is no fun.

I was amazed how tight the steering on this truck with 189,000 miles was. The only obvious issue is a cracked windshield at the top, and leaking steering gear box out of the back of it, and some oil leak around the drain pan area, just build up all around the bottom of the pan. Everything else is tip top shape, I really really liked the truck, just hope the bank will give me the money.

sorry but $8k for a 99 24v with 189k miles is no deal.

Really? It's a fair price around here, but not a great deal. I'm not going to pay $8000 I want to talk him down of course, it also depends if I can find out if it's a "53" block too.

I wasn't able to see if it was a "53" block. I stuck my head up by the power steering gear box and that is where I saw the leak on the back side of the box. I thought that was where the 53 was printed on the side of the block, is that true?

ok.... you caught me still trying to steer you to a 12v again.

condition being equal... I'd much rather get a higher mileage 12v, than a lower mileage 24v.

here's a few 12v within driving distance. don't give up... 12v 4x4 ext cab with auto are not that hard to find. it's the 12v 4x4 ext cab with 5sp ... that's the hard to find one.

the problems with these craigslist ads is... the good ones are gone within hours.

if you must get a 24v... look at the bottom listing

Wow, thanks again. I really appreciate it.

The 24V at the bottom, I don't want because I know he's drove and pulled hard with that truck. I don't want a truck that has been chipped.

I've got a buddy that lives in Las Cruces, he might be able to look at the red '96 for me.

that red 96 sounds like a sweet truck... it's got the same updated wheels I've got on my 96. I paid $650 for my wheels w/michlins, off a 2008 CTD.

FYI... 96 is one of the best year for 12v CTD.

but that CTD in St Louis has 4x4 w/5sp & ext cab... the hardest to find combo

Ya I noticed. But it could still be wore out you know. I don't have the time to drive that far away to look at a truck and it not be worth it.

Man I really like the white one I drove the other day. It felt really good, and I feel confident in the purchase of the truck if the bank will come through for me.

With a newer VP and LP, thats a pretty good deal. Assuming it has decent tires, everything works, etc.

'02, auto 112,000 2002 dodge 4x4 diesel trade???? he said it has a little loose steering, and a couple of little dings on the doors. Replaced VP44 recently, $14,500.

He wants to trade my Jeep + cash for the truck to make up the difference. The truck is over priced at $14,500. But I also don't want to take a hit on my Jeep. After everything I have done to my Jeep it's worth $8000 to someone who would use it, but to a normal every day person understanding nothing about Jeep's it's not worth $8000. KBB has his truck marked at $13,750, but KBB has my Jeep marked at $5500 which is around what I paid for it bone stock, and it runs a heck of a lot better now and can perform better.

ackkkk... what a suck deal on the 2002 24v...$14k
if you are stuck on getting a 24v... plan on either spending $$$ for a FASS or you'll be spending another $2k for a VP44/lift pump.

FYI the 97 12v 5sp 4x4 in St. Louis is SOLD... I knew that wouldn't last long.

I'd rather go thru a bit more trouble up front chasing down a 12v at a distance vs paying more later with a 24v.

take your pick...

What do you guys think I should offer him?

Walk away from it. I'm serious. Keep looking. With the market the way it is today, there is no excuse to look at a vehicle that's overpriced, especially when it's over KBB value. I have yet to pay close to KBB, always been thousands under.

Now about the truck...get this, it doesn't make sense to me. I have never heard of a vp44 doing south without the lift pump not being the fault. The owner said he had the vp44 replaced but the lift pump was tested and was pumping 7psi so they did not replace the lift pump just the injection pump. I thought to myself, why not replace the lift pump it's cheap insurance.

It also had a gooseneck ball in the bed so there is a hole cut in the bed, he also said there are a couple of door dings. I have no clue why this guy thinks this truck is worth that much money it's just crazy.

I would like to offer my Jeep + $4000 cash.
