12v swap 85 F350 CCLB. 4wd

Ran my h1c for a while to get me by. Then I went on craigslist and luckily found a wh1c and hy35 both in awesome condition. So now I'm running the wh1c. I'll sell the hy if anyone needs it.

So I'm now wondering y this truck is pretty impressive but it's missing something. Got tons of top end. Not so much on the low end. So I got into the pump and.. Well. Blacksmoke the pirate was already in there. Typical google tune. The AFC is gutted and the fuel plate was supposed to be "shaved". I guess what guy I bought the engine from meant was he ground it down with his harbor freight angle grinder. It was also slid all the way forward. I unfortunately have less than desireable delivery valves and 11mm plungers.

Based on what I have available to me all I could really do was slide the fuel plate back towards stock. So on a hunch I did. I moved it about 1/8" and what a difference. I can only assume I was just overfueling. It has a lot more torque on the low end. Still not at the level of pulling thru a stock clutch. But I'll get there.
 
So now that you have it together and have been driving it are you happy with it? Have you pulled anything yet. I've heard the electric fans aren't the best when towing.

I'll answer that on as many levels as I can. Now I loved my idi. I know a lot of guys don't like them. I did all the upgrades. It would start no matter what the temp outside and it ran great. It was limited by it's design. But With 4.10s and turboed it got the job done. Now this truck running great even after the pump being messed with will walk all over my old truck. The temp gauge never moves and I've yet to have the fans come on. Even when towing. And I have 35" tires and 3.55 gears. It's amazing how thermally efficient they are. Am I happy with the fuel mileage? No. However I know that's bc of my pump situation. And I know for a fact I will get more mileage and performance out of it once I correct the pump. So basically. If it runs and tows this great with the pump all jacked up and the timing at 10*. It can only get better. The trans is awesome. It shifts like a car. And the gear spacing is perfect for the cummins. And to go one step further. I better be happy with it. It's kinda the final frontier for me. I have no interest in more modern electronic diesels that come with 8 miles of wiring.
 
I've had a bunch of IDI's myself and its night and day between them and the Cummins. Once you get the AFC straightened out your mileage should go up.

Fuel mileage mystery solved. The tank selector valve was set on the front tank but it was returning to the rear tank. I figured it out when fuel started spraying out of the rear gas tank that I never fill.
 
Did you replace it or bypass it. I know years ago they were very pricy and hard to find.
 
Well it's been some time since I have updated the thread. Wasn't much to say. I have been averaging 25mpg and damn it's fun to drive. Did some upgrades today that yielded AWESOMe results.

Rebuilt injectors and installed
270 marine nozzles
PAC brake valve springs

Engine is smoother and quieter than ever before. I almost swung the behemoth into the barrier getting on the highway. Yeah, 4th gear sideways getting on highway. I'll admit roads were damp. But damn with 3.55s and 35" tires??

Had a few injectors that were roasted. One was actually burnt up. I don't know how it ran as well as it did with the injectors being in that shape. I now have what seems like instant power and smooth as silk. And now more cackle.
