1967 RS Duramax Camaro

Evidently the 3rd was set up with a Pro Gear, which is basically a drag race only ring and pinion made out of a softer metal to help absorb the shock of hard launches on the strip. It should not be driven on the street... According to the manufacturer, the Pro Gear was most likely the howling/whining sound coming from the axle. I hope it was...

Here's the old ring and pinion, yoke and pinion support.

And the rebuilt 3rd.

Couple videos.

This is when I took a friend for a quick test ride. Spinning the tires through second and letting off. Chirped the tires shifting into third, not a full throttle run.

This one I took my fiance for a ride around the block. The video really accentuates the rattles from the doors being disassembled and the lift pump being annoyingly loud. The rear axle is also making a whining sound over 20mph, so that's on my list of things to fix soon. This was also not a full throttle run.

I have only loaded a small tune on it and it runs great. There's still a lot of little things to work out and fix, but it'll get there.

Seriously dude, who needs Porn when I have videos like those! Awesome Craftsmanship.

:thankyou2:

I'm looking forward to taking it for a drive again. I have to take it easy on it for a few hundred miles to break the gears in. I'm really hoping I can get that accomplished before the TPD dyno day on March 8th, and the rain we're getting right now is not helping... but it is helping our drought.

If this thing is going to be at TDP on the 8th I will be there for sure! I love this car and it would be a good enough reason for my uncle to drive up there while we're in San Francisco.

Total Performance Diesel's dyno day is coming up fast. Im going to try to get the hood finished so the car looks decent. I think it's a long shot I'll be able to get 500 miles on the new ring and pinion so I can put it on the rollers. Worst case scenario, I'll be there hanging out all day.

Went out and broke in the new ring and pinion this morning. The old Pro Gear was indeed the cause of the howling/whining sound, and is now gone. Now I'm pretty sure the heim's on the 4 link are a little worn out and making noise. Those are expensive and will have to be on the to do list...

first time on this site at the recommendation of my instructor. you've given me tons of great information and ideas for my project. great Camaro BTW very tastefully done, cant wait to see the video of its first pass down the strip :clap::clap:

Glad I could help. :thankyou2:

I took advantage of the nice weather and put about 50-60 miles on the Camaro today. Got lots of smiles and thumbs up from other folks on the road.

Things I have noticed so far:

The rear heims are worn out and I'm 90% sure they are the cause of the rear suspension noise.

A few rattles: the ashtray, lock rods, quarter glass tracks, and occasionally the inner door handles. I will have to address these over time.

I haven't put much fuel in it, but it is sipping fuel. No mileage calculations yet.

The hottest it has gotten is 185-190* on my temp gauge, and I believe operating temperature is 210*. I've used the electric fans a couple times, but they weren't necessary. I sat at quite a few stoplights today in decently warm weather (70-72*) and the motor never got any hotter with no fans.

I got on highway 12 and got up to about 70-80 mph and it floated down the road very nicely. I was concerned earlier on some of our other roads because there were some odd vibrations and I couldn't tell if it was from the road or the car, but once I hit the nice stretch of highway, I realized it was the crappy paving.

All in all, I'm pretty pleased so far. Still have to take the hood off and work on getting it painted. That will be next weeks project.

That's awesome that the car is working out so well for ya!!!! Glad to hear about it and live vicariously through you!!!:snoop:

Been awhile since I've posted anything. There's been a bit of chatter online about the Camaro lately. I found out about these after they were posted.

PowerblockTV shared the first video of me driving around the parking lot. Of all the people who posted negative comments, all I can say is they displayed different degrees of ignorance and unappreciation for it. It's to be expected I guess, not everybody is aware of modern diesel performance and technology.

Also, StreetlegalTV posted an article on it. Pretty similar to what Diesel Army Magazine wrote.

LOL I got a real kick out of some of those comments... pretty amazing how uninformed some people are

I loaded a 120hp tune instead of the 40hp tune I was running. Goosed it on the way home and almost shat myself. I'm looking forward to the season opener on Saturday. It's going to be interesting to say the least...

Well the NHRDA season opener at Famoso went well. I was able to make 3 passes with a best pass of 13.004 at 109mph, accidentally starting off in 2nd gear on that pass. Not very fast, but decent baselines for me to improve upon. I learned a lot, thanks especially to Gordon of Smoking Gun Racing for giving me some great tips.

So my next time out, I will drop tire pressure much more, heat the tires up in the burnout box considerably more, attempt to use the trans brake, and run a hotter tune. The Camaro launched nice and straight with no wheel hop, just spun the tires mostly due to them not being heated up and aired down enough.
