Are the 6.4 really that bad?

I am thinking about getting a 6.4 as well. Im tired of changing gears in a twin turbo cummins. I have been very impressed with some buddies 6.4 just by putting exhaust, egr delete, and programer on it. My question is what programer are most people going with?

I've been selling alot of the H&S programmers for them. The Spartans work pretty well but I've seen a few burnt up TCMs from them.

so yalll reccomend a h&s over the spartan. I was leaning more towards the h&s anyways. My buddies are running spartans and they wanted to go to h&s as well but spartan is being a pain and they arent wanting to unlock it to the truck.

Do they have custom tuning yet for the h&s

I'll tell you I don't like them on the d max.. if I got a dmax I'd go with efi ...

I would have to post pics, my 2010 F450 6.4 went through 2 engines in 142k.

First engine - bone stock - stuck #1 injector torched piston - denied warranty because it had an auxiliary tank in the bed (anyone who's towed distance with a stock 6.4 knows why it had an aux tank). Dealer and ford claimed a piece of aluminum made it through the ford fuel filters and stuck the injector...

Second engine - EGR delete, DPF delete, H&S on a small tune
Cracked 3 pistons, tore up #8 cylinder wall. I can post pictures when I get home, can't do it from work right now.

The truck ran decent when it ran, was always thirsty. I know a lot of guys who don't have the problems, that's just my experience.

What about that random tapping/knocking/ticking sound the 6.4 make,,? I think its wrist pin slap. Even tho fords TSB says do no address issue...

Bringing this thread back up. I have this ticking/ knocking sound right now. I did not notice it before heads were off for studs. It is most noticeable now and is very rhythmic.

My company had 50 6.4's at one time, I drove about 5 of them. I also own a 6.4, my brother had one, and a buddy of mine. I swear every single one I get in has a different engine sound. All of them completly stock besides my buddies. My company 6.4 which I put about 60k miles on in a year developed a weird sound at about 80k miles. Went to dealer and found no problems. Truck ran great until they sold it at 122k.

Ya my truck runs pretty darn good I just dont like the tick. I didnt have the tick before I took it in but maybe I am just hearing it now i dont know. Sounds like valve train noise I think but unsure

Ya my thinking as well in that there is also a TSB out on them as well I believe. Hopefully that is all it is
