lets talk clutches

stroke this, what gear do u pull in and is it a six or five speed

Its more power than you will be making Dane. Thats a gaurentee!LOL Glad to see your building something. Or at least thinking about it. Thought for a second you may be getting out of it for a while..

The thread stated lets talk clutches I didnt realize we could only talk about the good ones and not about the :bs:bad ones! NOfullpullEL OUT!

No SB doesnt use shims the only way to adjust them is to turn the bolts that hold the fingers down and that only fixes the the through out bearing riding against the fingers

Anyone have pics of these shimmed clutches? I'd like to get a visual for how that works. Thanks

Where ur pressure plate bolts to ur flywheel there are shims on the studs mines a diaphram pressure plate

Think of it like this. The SB has the recessed fly wheel and the first clutch disc goes down in to the fly wheel. Machine that outer ridge off flat with the bronze inlay and replace the outer rig with shims where the pressure plate bolts to the fly wheel sp ot can be adjusted. In theory you could take a SB fly wheel to machine shop and have the outer rig machined down to be able to put a few shims on there and you would have some adjustment to tighten them up, say you take .030 off the top replace it with .030 to keep all the tollerences the same in stock form.

Gotcha, thanks guys.

I like my Iron Giant...

Ran an EEP dual for 3 years and then had a cracked floater.. Ok clutch but would recommend the SBC guys though!!!!!!

what is better for a daily driver a sprung hub or solid hub?

Normally, I would have said sprung hub...until I kept melting the springs out of the discs when sled pulling. Now, there is no doubt in my mind that a solid hub Iron Giant 3850 is very streetable & I even tow 18k# with it.

for competition use the rigid's are far better. alot less parts. more parts = more room for failure.

Can you guys tell me this.....Those of you running sintered iron, do they make a chirp sound as you release the clutch & the disc starts to engage? Mine does it quite often, but not always. I have never pulled it yet & only have 700 street miles on it. Will this sound stop after I hook?

Ya mine does and has alot of hooks and still chirps

Thanks. What pressure plate?

Anyone street drive a sintered iron disc? What kind of mileage are you getting out of a clutch before they are toast?

You should get a lot of mileage out of one. They will always chirp and squel some as you engage them, nature of the beast.

When I first installed the clutch, it didn't chirp at all. After I put about 60 miles on it, the chirping started. I thought something was coming apart, sounded like it was a bad pilot bearing or something. LOL Other than the chirping sound, I love the clutch.
