Respectable HP....

Depends on which is heavier LOL but usually a 12v is lighter. IMO a street truck is something you can drive every day and have fun while doing it. It does work on a rare occasion and can race/pull but isn't too far into it.

Mine is around 520hp DD. I'd like to hit 600 with it and leave it there. No real reason for 600 other than its a relatively round number, and I don't want to explode the G56. But like I said, thats for a DD. I'd consider my dually, which would at best be a weekend warrior, a street truck. I'd like to follow in RonA's footsteps with it. I fully expect to be over 1k once I actually get to building it.

So like was said, need to define 'street truck'.

I DD my truck and recently pulled about 12.5k over a 7000ft pass. I would guess im around 550. HP calc says im at 517. but this thing sure acts like there is more to it than that.

i would say a 12 valve running high 12's is respectable. ;)

I vote for 500hp. So many people claim they have it, so if you actually do thats respectable.

Basically this. I think we tend to overlook the actual ratio of 500+whp trucks to trucks that are in the "160-350whp" range..... Sometimes its disheartening to compare my ~500whp truck to many of the others of CompD, then I remember that we are the 1337 of the diesel performance world.

To be honest, I dont even bat an eye at people who claim hp in the range of 350-500, because they usually are just adding hp numbers from their intake/exh/injectors... on the stock turbo. If I hear someone talking about turbo modifications then i start paying attention, but again, you can slap a 66 on there with a ****ty tune and still not get to 450.

Totally agree! There are a ton of guys/kids/tools that say they have 500hp +, but will never do anything to try and prove it. They typically have about 400hp in my experiences...

500hp is pretty fun and still somewhat reliable as far as the drivetrain goes. 600hp is more fun, and as long as the the truck isnt an anchor then you can take about any car on the street if the need arises. Havent driven a 700hp truck yet but im sure its even more fun the few times you can actually use it on the street.

IMO an actual 550rwhp truck with a p7100 is pretty impressive. I personally am shooting for high 11s @ the track this year for my DD, whatever hp that is will make me happy.

600 to 700 is a good range as long as it's well tuned.

Also, I would like to add that as my knowledge of the performance diesel community has grown/evolved, my goals have changed to this -

I dont really care as much what I would make on a dyno as making a good pass at the track.... my ultimate goal is to hit 100mph in the 1/8th.

(and drive the truck home haha.)

I daily drive mine at ~700, it was a lot more fun to play with at about 600 though. My new half ton build is gonna be a 600 truck, so I vote 600 for a DD.

Extremely valid point-

if the truck is smokey, you dont have as much fun driving, and boost response is likely to not be very quick.

I agree, every other guy out there claims he has a million hp and all he needed was a tune and he cant figure out why all the other trucks have to change the charger and do fuel mods to make 450+ hp. I DD a 350-375hp VP ill be the first person to tell you its not a rocket.

yes, exactly the reason, if I could afford a 47 swap I'd be a much happier camper, I love my setup but driving in traffic isn't the most fun

agreed, id like an auto please. my nv4500 doesnt enjoy life.

Mine does pretty decent, I have problems getting it to go into gear occasionally, but other than that it does good. The DD clutch and jumpy starting off is what I hate. That's why I'm building a half ton with an AUTO! LOL

If we are talking about other people trucks, I don't care what they say they have. I'm more concerned with how well it runs, but like was said earlier, the guys that are bragging wont back it up.

more thoughts after my flight brief. LOL

You really appreciate the automatic when the power goes up a bit.
