Respectable HP....

having and using are two different things..

When my truck was in the 800 HP range a buddy asked me once how I drive with that much power everyday. My reply was that is takes 4000 RPM and 80 psi to make that much power...and I never see that on the street.

So usable power is much, much lower...still incredibly fun regardless.
At the same time, with my set up the way it is now, even though I can drive it largley smoke free on the street, I would like to back it down a little bit more...into the 550-600 range, mostly for the sake of milage and reliability (and hopefully lose the idle haze). Then change DV's and injectors for some dyno fun!! I hope that is still repectable.

I seem to be leaning toward a lower peak output but widening the power band. My smaller injectors and lower timing was actually more fun in day to day driving than my large injectors and higher timing.

2500RPM/40psi/30MPH led to a perfect balance of engine noise/turbo whine/tire squeal! LOL

But those injectors need rebuilt, which will happen this summer.

Steven Cole's (of EEP) 12 valve made 902hp on our dyno and I'm almost positive he drives it everyday.

Then offered to drive back down to tow our broken 6.0 back to Columbus....the truck is a blast to drive that's forsure.

Mine does pretty decent, I have problems getting it to go into gear occasionally, but other than that it does good. The DD clutch and jumpy starting off is what I hate. That's why I'm building a half ton with an AUTO! LOL

mine is moody, and ya sometimes cant get it into gear, itll randomly grind when im trying to be quiet, and its got a DD with a jumpy take off too. i will never win a drag race haha it shifts so damn slow

Same here, I gave a supercharged Cobra a run for his money at the strip one night though!

if its just a 5th gear race i might do alright, but shifting ehhhh ill pass

You really appreciate the automatic when the power goes up a bit.

This, my first truck was a 5 speed and around 600-650 hp blast to drive but no where near as fun as an auto. Only way to improve an auto is a good shifter and a manual valve bodie.

when I uesd to DD mine 570 RWHP is what it made and was a blast to drive. An actual 550rwhp gets my vote.

I really like the mid 500 range, but the newer trucks can do that with just a tuner so i suggested 600 to 700 so he won't have to worry about the 500hp tuner trash.:hehe:

Considering its a 12v that you have to actually get dirty and have some mechanical ability to make power since you cant just plug in power. I would say 5-600 is respectable as that is probably what it would take to be able to out run all your loud mouth buddy's plugged in 6.0s CR, and dmax trucks. To have around 600 would be respectable because you probably wouldnt have to worry about getting out run by 99% of your local diesels.

I have 2 friends with LLY dmax and PPE hot+2 that I need to race cause they swear its the fastest thing around. I dont think im going to put a whoopin on them but Im hoping I can get around them with a good launch and locked shifts. If I cant do it with this single 62, I should have them covered when the ht3b goes in.

Is this thread to help you plan the triple threat build?

EDIT: RONA we were typing at the same time and thats exactly what Im trying to say. Look how nice and short you made it :lolly:

I really wish I knew where I was at in the HP range. Never been on a dyno. But I have estimated that it is between 425-475 on the ol VP. I really want to put it in the mid 500's and run it there. On my seat of the pants meter, it is pretty fun to drive.

its called a butt dyno! and most peoples are wrong haha

Haha! Exactly, the butt dyno correction fators are way off for most people. Hell sometimes my truck feels like it has 850HP. LOL!

Maybe it;s like that fish you almost got up to the boat, but shook the lure. It can be as big as you want it to be.

the needle sticks on mine, gotta get me a digital one but ill never remember batteries.

butt dyno?

you know it's like 2x power if the truck makes a lot of noise whilst accelerating.....

my gf doesnt like my locked 3rd gear pulls because "it sounds like something's wrong with it":lolly:

Sort of...I already have ideas, I was just trying to get opinions. I made 429rwhp on one dyno and 433rwhp on another one with the HX35 and Garmon's stuff, so I definitely am shooting for more than 500, I'm just trying to do what makes sense for most people. I think I'll end up making as much power as I can with twins, the 160 pump (without taking it off) and a stock head with studs but no o-rings. Something easy and that everyone can do.

I like the idea of having a low smoke truck that has enough power to put some lengths on the "tuner" trucks. I think low 12's or high 11's ought to take care of most of them. The truck only weighs 6600 with me in it, so I have an advantage there too.

i used to tow with 450 rwhp

and a small set of twins on a 96 i had, and it would yank anything i put behind it with ease, and for playing mine was at 514/1096 best, but wayy to smokey and out of tune.. this was three to five years ago...

Im starting over again with the little toy in my sig, I have an 05 CR with the bolt ons and a smarty stuck on 5, that handles towing duty and 18-20 mpg highway, as well as work...

this lil one being a single cab long box with a manual, has a goal of 550-600 streetable, but thats for my own satisfaction, i dont race, id just like to say that i have it.. so it is

respectable 12v tow rig would be 450-500
streetable 12v would be 100 more horses

but then again im wayy out of the loop here and just trying to fit back in....

I think the correct answer has a lot to do with the weight of the truck. A lighter weight truck doesn't need big horsepower to be "respectable."

My 98' 12valve 4x4 at 7200 lbs with 400 HP running 14.6's is really mild. I plan to give it about 600 to the wheels with a fast spooling set of twins to meet my definition of respectable & reliable. I figure once you cross the 600 rwhp line, reliability & daily transportation use will be compromised.
