Results from my testing today

Hey guys, I have been having a loss of power at low boost and slightly less power on top of the turbo. there is more smoke present. I checked, rechecked and then checked everything again and found nothing. My truck loped on and off at idle, im was stumped.

Here was my train of thought not building boost and more black smoke are related, so what could cause that,....timing?.....air flow........? gremlins?.......

I seemed to be chasing my tail until i did my data logging at night when is was a nice cool 64 degrees f.

All the power was there, when it was cooler all was well, the 66/16/71 turbo lags something fierce now that summer is hear and to compound that the big sticks aren't getting the air density the need to really get cooking let alone light the turbo quickly. I satisfied myself with that answer after making multiple runs in the evening and the confirmed it again in the middle of the day at 3950ft above sea level., when the power dropped off again.

Does that sound like what was going on??

Even though my best passes were when it was cooler, I don't think that's my problem....

Almost 90-100 HP loss just because it got a little warm/ hot outside doesn't compute to me...

Thanks for sharing and trying to help though!!!:Cheer:

have you checked valve clearance yet, i have seen a few that took a little off of a lobe and it was making a popping sound out the air filtern did a compression test and it was fine but the valve wasnt opening up enough to flow the air up top so there was a loss in power and slower spool while driving, i would check that out, the valve clearance would be alot more than spec if its bad, hope this helps and hope its back up and running soon

I dont think the warmer air is my problem either. I just ran my best time 3 weeks ago and the temps were about the same. Plus I did not have this sound that can be heard through the airfilter.

while you have the cover off, adjust the valves......... what kind of lift setup you using ? fresh filters, air and fuel ? and lastly, did you pop the high pressure releif valve? I would plug that thing and test again, and if that brings the psi up, decide if you want to run that way, or with a new releif valve....... high presure one .

Any white smoke on the bottom end or just black smoke heavier than normal

NO white smoke except for start up / warm up.....decompressed ...pistons cut a full .100

Just heavier black smoke when warm....slower spool.....less total power at WOT and more black smoke...

Set lash several times....Will do again when assembling

Brand new lifters that are processed from F1 when I built the motor using an F1 Billet Steel Cam....Yes, I had my block line bored and cam bushings installed in all 7 holes...

F1 ZDDP additive used ...whole bottle twice already!!! Changed the oil after I popped my first HG...

Air filters was new when I installed twins....Less than 2K -2.5K total miles on the whole build!!!

62/71/13ss over S480 with race cover....

F1 Flux 3.3's...........Smarty / MP8

I have a Floor It Rail Cap....

hey david
does your top turbo have the bolt with spring waste gate adjustment? if so, check the nut on the bolt to see if it has worked itself upward.

Hey man!!! Long time / no see!!!

Yeah, it's got it but I've had the housing off and adjusted it many times now....I know it's tight...

Thanks though..

You ever get that cam installed???

on my truck I lost rail pressure and it turned out one of the injector tubes wasen't seating properly and was leaking down just an idea and something to look at.

Thanks man, but my RP seems fine...27.5K at WOT with MP8 up....

I was having a laggy issue also and noticed the nut on the bolt attached to the wastegate worked it's way up to top of bolt. i fixed it and have power, quick spool and no heavy smoke.
no the cam is not installed yet, been workin' alot lately (North Carolina, Robins AFB in Macon, noah's arc in locust grove)
I need to stop by and say hey to jeff and everyone. i need to tell him my new tranny has been awesome.
Hopefully i can take a week or atleast a couple days off and maybe we can install cam and springs here soon.
I'll try to stop by sometime this week. I hope you get your issues figured out

Bump back to the top for another question or two...

After seeing my results from bore scope and compression testing..

Almost 100hp loss, with spool issues, heavier black smoke, and ticking noises coming from the head area heard through the firewall while driving......Wouldn't you think that it's an injector???

I've still gotta measure the pushrod lift to rule out Cam wear but I don't expect to see a problem....ONLY 2 - 2.5K miles on this build with fresh Schaefers 7000 oil and a full bottle of Dons ZDDP at the build and then another fresh oil change and bottle of ZDDP when I popped the first HG....

Is there anything else to check that could cause this kinda power loss?????

I think you caught a nasty case of BBS. Better get some drugs before the infection gets worse. If you don't take care of it, you may have a hard time breaking 500 rwhp!

God I hope not!!! LOL

All that time and money down the drain!!! lol

wow thats got to drive you up a wall, everything seems set right...:bang
Did the results come back on the injectors?

Have you checked your exhaust manifold bolts.I know on my ATS my allen head bolts come loose after time on the lower bolts.Makes ticking noise and seems a little laggy.

I have not infact....but when I pull my Htt SS housing back off AGAIN!!! to send to them for the new WG puck fix, I'll try to tight them up....

thanks

YES is does drive me crazy!!!!:bang

No, not yet...I know they are crazy busy right now...
I'm sure it'll be sometime next week before they get to'em...

I'm SO ready to bust another 11.50 or better!!!:rockwoot:
