im not trying to step on any toes here.
i just put my second silverbullet on my truck and the thrust washer gave out after 3 days and 180 miles (lots of shaft play in and out) this is the second one that i have had problems with, the first i got a few months out of it. neither have seen over 60 psi or 1500 degrees for longer than a second. never shut down hot ( have a timer set for 2 min or 350 deg)
is there are any tips or sugestions you guys have.

Is it getting full oil pressure to the center section? Id check that first. 180 miles after one failure kinda says there may not be oil there.

Are you making sure that the center cartridge has oil prior to starting it? Here are the instructions that came with my new S400, this is how I'll start its life.

oil feed line is clean blew air and brakeclean through it to make sure it was clean, primed it with a pressurized pump with clean oil, let it idle for 10 min before i hit the throttle and then drove it 100 miles before it saw over 10 psi

The line its self may be clean, but did you verify that oil is coming out of it at a proper rate while the truck is running. If its just dribbling a tiny but of oil and cant keep up with the turbos needs. I would start the truck with the line clamped into a bucket securely and verify that its moving enough oil threw it. Then dump the oil back in the truck(using a clean bucket). 2 turbos failing with the same problem so closely with bearing goin out can really only point you towards oil problems.

any other ideas i would like to see if i can find something before the new one goes back on

I know exactly whats wrong. I went through two myself not long ago. Only thing incommon is it sounds like all 4 of them are II. :poke:

Have you checked your oil pressure regulating piston and spring. The oil filter header has this mechanism built into it. Many mechanics will ignor this part of the engine. If the piston is worn or stuck or sticks intermitently then the turbo is the first thing to go out. This sticking causes low oil pressure. The oil pressure gauge can even show 40psi but that pressure is measured on the side of the block and not on the oil filter header. JKT you got to be kidding!!!!

Thrust bearings going out are usually caused by overspooling from too much RPM, fuel or nitrous. They also can fail from no oil supply or low oil pressure. Another thing that can cause overspool is a plugged air intake or in this case a intake system that is too small for the turbos air flow. A Silver Bullet is a nice upgrade but if your intake system is too small the compressor wheel will not stay loaded as the RPM and the power level goes up. This will cause a overspool.
Is there any more information that you can give me? Do you have nitrous on and how much do you use?

I had a HTT 62/71/14 on my truck for 2 years. I traded a guy for a 64/71/14. When I removed the 62/71 from my truck, it had minimum endplay. I sent it to II to have new bearings installed before shipping it to the new owner. When he recieved it, he ran it for 30 miles & noticed it had endplay once again. He removed it, sent it back to II & had the bearings replaced again. They covered it, but he had to pay shipping both ways. I never had any issues with products from II before. Is it possible you guys got a shipment of bad bearings about 2 months ago?

man I just ordered one. dont need to be hearing this........

I'm sure Brady will treat you right if a problem arose, no worries. I'm just wondering if he could have got bad bearings or something? This problem is not as common as it appears in this thread.

no nitrous on the truck all im running is water/meth through 2 625ml nozzles, the intake is big enough the filterminder doesent move (it does work i checked it). im running 7x.018 injectors and it doesnt seem to clear it up. ill check on the oil ill see how much flow i have and ill put in a mech gauge in the other port to watch the pressure so see if there is any problem

how much boost psi is a bullet good for, when i put it on the truck it was doing 60 psi and i didnt even touch the allen screw or the wastegate. also how it says that its good for 800hp on the site is that on spray or fuel

These parts are all new from Borg Warner. I never rule anything out. We have sold thousands of turbos with no problems. I have not seen any defective parts but you know I will look to make double sure. We have always used USA made parts from OEM turbo suppliers. WE DO NOT USE CHEAP OFFSHORE PARTS!!! Some shops will use Chinese made parts. I/We will not. We always use the best and supply the best turbos that can be made. Thanks, Brady

My turbo will be back at II on monday for inspection. if some one there could inform me on what they find in the charger either oil or overspooled i would appreciate it, so i can look at that area instead of searching for the wrong thing. i hope i can solve it so i can drive the truck more than 5 days every 2 months
