95' Junker Drag Truck

Why not just 625's? I guess my truck isnt quite the same setup but I just have orings and 625's at 160 ft lbs, i ran the **** out of my truck for two years then cracked a cylinder, head gasket was fine still.

Why 160ft. lbs.? Just curious.

Dang

Dang Will, again......

I bet your getting pretty quick at swapping head gaskets out.
Since your all practiced up you should pop by Idaho and help me get mine buttoned up. Lol

Would fire rings necessitate a new block? The existing block has oring grooves right?

Well, I got tired of blowing headgaskets, so in an attempt to remedy the issue, the engine was pulled and torn-down, block is at the machine shop getting the deck cut FLAT!!!

If I can't keep it together with the freshly machined deck and head surfaces plus the same 041" stainless oring setup, I'm going to have to start over with a new block and pony up the extra expense to get a fire-ring setup. If a new engine build begins, I might have to do more upgrades "while it's apart..."

For those wondering, the steel Hamilton Cam looks to be in excellent shape despite my "resurfaced" 24v tappets and non-bushed block, maybe there is something to this high zinc engine oil.... or maybe I'm just lucky.

High Zinc Oil

What oil are you running Will?

I add Zinc and ER to mine at every oil change because I'm paranoid.

Let me know if you decide to fire ring the old girl and ill get you hooked up buddy! Just give me an address and I'll send you a gasket kit. :)

Update:Racing!!!

The freshly machined block/deck surface did the trick and so far the new headgasket and orings have held up without a single problem.

Last weekend I drove up to the last NHRDA event of the season in Billings Montana for the Big Sky Truck Fest.

In the 10.90 index class, I pulled off a #1 qualifying position with a moderate 11.20 pass at 127ish MPH; the rest of the field was struggling to run the number both running quicker and slower than the index. I tried to qualify on my smaller 29.5" drag slicks which really weren't doing well on either end of the track, so I bolted on the bigger 32" drag slicks for eliminations.

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to beat my personal best of 10.90 @ 126 MPH from a couple years back for fear of breaking out and going quicker than the 10.90 index time. It was fun to make it through the rounds and bring home the 1st place trophy in the 10.90 index class.

My best trap speed of the event (on the small slicks) was 128 MPH, there was a scale at the track so I found out my total race weight with driver is 5330 lbs. This calculates to 758 HP to the tires, not earth shattering by any means, but still a good result considering the RPM limited turbo setup and small slicks really fell off on the topend compared to the bigger 32" slicks I tried in the elimination rounds. The bigger slicks showed stronger split times and trap speeds at the 1/8th mile so I suspect the trend would continue and result in 130 MPH trap speed, but I don't have a slip from an all-out pass on the big tires so maybe next time...

I also entered the burnout contest to try my chances at the $500 purse. I wound it up to 4500 rpm in overdrive with a pair of old 35" tall BFG All Terrains which calculates to 195 MPH wheel speed in the burnout, but I didn't quite get enough audience noise to win the decibel meter determined winner. NHRDA still took a few good pictures of the burnout contest and races:

Am I gonna get to see the Junker live at Ennis?

Yes, I plan to attend and race at the World Finals in Ennis. I'm going to leave the tuning identical to how it is now, it spools great at the starting line and makes enough power to run the index. If I get bumped out early, and they have an open test n tune lane, I may try some tuning changes and go for a new personal best ET record.

Cool. Been wanting to see it run. Just wish I could have got my farm truck qualified, so I could bring it with me. Maybe next year.

It's awesome to not only see updates on this thread, but good updates. I used to read this thread quite often.

I'm glad you got the head gasket to stay in place.
Are you going to keep making it faster, or have you reached your goals?
