95' Junker Drag Truck

The other problem with changing out the aluminum planetary is I'd have to buy a new intermediate shaft. I haven't found a steel planetary that will fit the "2nd design splines" on the intermediate shaft, therefore, to upgrade I'd have to buy an intermediate shaft with "3rd design splines stock on model year 96' and newer.

I'm 90% sure I'm going to run the aluminum planet until it breaks, same with the stock input shaft, and the the scored low/reverse drum.

I think my lack of traction is the saving grace on these transmission hard parts. If this was a 4x4 or had huge slicks, it would probably wipe out all kinds of hard parts in the tranny.

so 96 and newer had steel planets correct?

96' and newer have a steel front planet. The rear planet is still aluminum. The overdrive planet is steel on all models 94' and newer, I don't know much about the pre 94' transmissions so I can't comment.

I believe, don't know, 2003 and newer 48re transmissions have steel planetaries for all 3 and the overdrive planetary is a 6 pinion steel unit whereas the 94' through 02' came with a 5 pinion steel overdrive planetary.

I looked into doing a swap to the 48RE planets, but found out the whole geartrain needs to be switched over.

I have a 98 trans from a gas P/U (I think it's a 46RE), and it still has the aluminum front planet. That may only have been for 96+ diesels, or the 47RE.

That's good, i have a 97 tranny in my 94 now. Getting the drive shafts today and hopefully it will be rolling with no issues this week! But you know how that goes.

Correct, non V-10 gas trucks came with 46re-rh with aluminum planets and less frictions in the clutch packs.

Find anything else interesting during the tear down?

Nope, everything else looks great. I'm just waiting on my last little shipment of parts from Wittrans to arrive so I can put it back together.

I had to order a couple of seals (pump to transmission case, and overdrive to main case) so I forked over a few bucks for a new kevlar band, a few new clutches, and another used direct clutch apply plate that I plan to reuse as a backing/reaction plate in the forward clutch pack.

I was flipping through the pages of the June 2011 issue of Diesel Power Magazine and I came across a nice little write-up on page 130. It looks like they snapped a nice shot of the burnout competition on page 132 as well.

i just looked through it at the store the other night... oh well will have to go back!!

Planetary

I have an extra Steel 5 pinion planetary I am looking to sell, I bought it off Ebay because I was gonna send back the one I got from Wit trans.

Congrats on that. I wish I could find a 2wd to play with.

I was reading through that today too, big blue. It was neat seeing them show you a little love.

I just picked up my steel planet yesterday. It DOES fit my intermediate shaft from my 94 47RH. The shaft from my 98 46RE Parts trans also fits. What my local trans shop told me is the planet splines are different on a torqueflite so you'd need to change the output shaft on that, but the intermediate shaft splines on the OD trans are the same for aluminum and steel planets.
You have no excuse now. Try purchasing a used steel planet, as a new one is a $100 on ebay. You should be able to get a used one through a local shop for less than $75. Look at it this way, is the $75 or even $100 worth saving if you strip the splines and have to pull the trans out AGAIN?

did you replace front and rear planetaries?

Just the front. From what I understand that is the weak link. The other parts hold up fine in most applications.

Be careful on moving parts around from the tranny models. I had a shop put some 47RE parts in a 48RE and messes up the rear gear and housing. So make sure it fits right and is the right size.

I thought the same thing, I bought a newer shaft from a 96newer 47re from wit trans so I could run the 5 steel planetary, it was the exact same shaft as my 94. So now I also have a spare intermediate shaft
