95' Junker Drag Truck

First test drive went ok, blew the interstage pipe off the smaller He351cw on the first hit!!! Luckily, I've had enough boot failures over the years that blown or slipped boots don't make me jump out of my skin....

Fixed the clamp, and second test drive went EXCELLENT!!!! Good power, good spool-up, the motor sounds healthy, and the truck is 100% ready to race!!!

On my limited road testing up to the posted speed limit on the Interstate, boost topped out around 62 psi, which is way down from the previous stock head, stock cam setup that would usually hover between 80 & 90 psi. Inter-stage boost was down from 54 psi on the prior stock motor setup to around 40 psi. I won't have total peak boost numbers until I make some passes at the track because overdrive is where the motor gets loaded down enough to make peak boost.

Horsepower feels the same as near as I can tell after almost 2 years, it will still easily spin the 33" street tires at 60 MPH. It's hard to get a feel for the horsepower without illegal speed or a drag strip and slicks.

I've noticed no real spool-up differences (as near as I can tell from 2 years ago), but the truck sure turns over faster/starts easier with the slightly reduced compression. It used to struggle and would stall the starter on a warm motor with one battery. Now it turns over like a regular Dodge Ram Cummins with (2) batteries.

Can I resist the temptation to add a bigger set of delivery valves before the race this weekend....

Wow, 20-30 psi drop is great! That new head/cam setup must be way more efficient. What were you spinning the engine to on your road runs?

It shifts 2-3 at 3200 rpm and 3rd gear at 3000 rpm is 82mph, so probably not over 3200 rpm...

It's difficult to look at the tach when the rear end is loose.

How come you kept the shift points so low? That's barely over stock isnt it? Or does that just match up with your turbo's better?

Once the turbo is lit, I shift as low as I can without surging the charger. It loads the engine more, making more power/torque/boost. Thats also why you want to lock the converter in the lowest gear possible, to load the engine earlier.

Gotcha. I would think that you'd be best looking at your torque curve off a dyno, and shifting as soon as it start drastically dropping. That way you're always in the power and have the least amount of shifts possible?

Can you get the TC locked in 1st or do you just blow through it too quick?

He has a 160hp pump and they don't make good power over 3200 rpm. I think he proved that on a dyno run. Makes sense to keep the engine in the powerband as much of the time as possible.

Looking forward to hear results from the track!

this is what i miss, my 95 junk dragger isnt steet legal. and ive hit the road once or twice, but didnt make it far before seeing the law. i get no good 'warm up runs'

ahh, that makes more sense. I guess I forgot that it had a stock ppump cam in it. :Cheer:

Can't wait to see you in Bakersfield buddy! Maybe we can finally have our beater race you brought up a few years ago!

We definitely need Randy from NHRDA to announce a "Grudge Race" between the two Junkers. Mine still looks like a hammered Junker and yours has made great leaps and bounds in upgrades transforming it from Junker to Drag Truck.

Yeah I slightly steered away from the budget part. Speed and HP are too addicting. Mines no peach by any measure and I don't have a front bumper done yet so I'm more beaterish than normal. Haha. We definitely should talk to Randy though. That could be fun. Too bad Austin won't be ready.
