Are the 6.4 really that bad?

How safe u think the motor is with 570 hp? Any other motor safe on stock head bolts at 570 horse and 50+ lbs of boost? Exactly.

I think keating machine has some 12v's at 1200+hp and 135 lbs of boost on stock head bolts :hehe:

I have 113,000 miles on my 08 F350, totally stock.

I hate the 6.4 compared to the stock 05 5.9 CR in my other truck. Its laggy, no torque and it needs a lot of revs to make power. Its also a fuel pig.

My 6.4 needed a new fuel system at 99,500 miles due to high pressure pump failure. It got new injectors, lines, pump and rails, all thanks to Ford. Had it not been on warranty, it would have cost about $10K. My neighbors F350 needed the same thing.

Other than the engine, I absolutely love my F350.

There are a couple good threads on PSA about blown 6.4s. Apparently they have issues with the rocker arms wearing out.

To add to the piston. 6 cracks in exhaust seats on heads, front pump cover where water pump destroyed.

They're pretty horrible in stock form. DPF delete and a good tune is a must.

I just did a turbo pipe o ring today... ( for an oil leak) No driveability issues.... I saw the motor/ timing cover/ oil cooler/ valvecovers were painted black... so I call ford... my buddy works there .. Ay run this vin... 109k on the clock... 3rd long block......

Junk.. YOu cant change my mind on them sure they make more power then the 6.0 But for the average joe who puts a tuner on his truck egr delete and does studs.. your solid on a 6.0 you do all that on a 6.4 and you have to wonder about cavitation.. rod issues.. piston issues. lifter issues. no thank you Ill take a d max over one of those things

Ok im off my box now. lol

stock trucks that follow Ford's 10k mile oil change interval and idle all the time or just putt around will do all of those things...

Cavitation is easily avoided with the venturi T update and staying on top of the coolant.

a buddy of mine had a Job 1 08 service truck and it went through three engines in under 125k miles. It was bone stock, and it idled all day.

my old director cringed when I told him I was buying an 08 with just over 100k miles. avg speed on it was 41mph. hadn't been idled. only things on the oasis were radiator, venturi update, and oil cooler

40k deleted miles since, and I'd hop in the thing and drive it to Alaska tomorrow. I did thermostats about 20k ago because I could see the ECT going down a little on my monitor.

Everybody used to say 6.0's were junk... Now days it's "well, if you stud them and delete the EGR, they're good to go"

If you delete a 6.4 and don't beat the tar out of it and don't tow with a friggin' drag racing tune, they're good to go too.

I wish people were even more scared of them than they are. I'd love to be able to buy another one even cheaper than I got mine! :D

There is no way my engine would have got a new fuel system under warranty if it was tuned and deleted. Ford is cracking down on that stuff. And the fuel system failure on my truck had nothing to do with the EGR/DPF system.

nope, it had to do with crappy fuel and/or filtration

this was Ford's first common rail... Ford owners are having the same teething issues with the 6.4 that Dodge owners had and Duramax owners had when they wen to HPCR

if you just do a dpf delete and put it back to stock if you have a catastrophic failure, Ford is the best of the big 3 about warranty... Different regions (dealers) are more or less friendly for different makes, but if you know the right people, you can get dang near anything warrantied :D

Bought my 2010 with 15k on it. Within a week of owning it, innovative tunes, 5 inch exhaust, b&w gooseneck hitch, and some airbags. Lowest tune it sees is the 275 tune ( extreme street ) Tows a 30ft gooseneck almost every other weekend with my puller on it. Dyno'ed 540 at spring fling on a non loaded dyno. Ran a 12.89 at 102 on 35's with 3.55's. Gets beat on every day And NOT ONE problem out of it after 35k. I'm not saying that it won't have problems eventually the way I run it. I'm planning on having to do a trans and studs one day! but There is NO WAY I'd ever own a 6.0 over a 6.4! I personally don't know one 6.0 owner that hasnt regretted buyin that pos of a motor. Nothing personal blackcloudctd, but to see a 6.0 owner call a 6.4 junk...

You definatly have to get rid of the dpf and the egr system and then they are great engines, my crew cab and reg cab both have been good trucks, just gotta change the damn filters people LOL

yeah because the 6.0 dont have crank.. rod.. piston issues.. what are you going to do about the other issues of a 6.4? theres a senior master tech on youtube.. ( NOT the bald headed douche bag) actual tech.. and he videos all the **** box 6.4 and 6.7's no bueno ..

once again, that senior master is dealing with 99.9% stock trucks

they're time bombs in stock form IMO

again deleting things adding tuners... dont change the fact of lower end issues... just like the lbz duramaxs they are know for cracking pistons

What about that random tapping/knocking/ticking sound the 6.4 make,,? I think its wrist pin slap. Even tho fords TSB says do no address issue...

Sounds like you really got something against a 6.4. Im not saying that they don't have problems, like everything else. But I would never recommend a 6.0 over a 6.4!! That's ridiculous

Our family has three 6 leakers in it and 2 6.4's Take a guess at which 2 have not been touched under the hood and guess which 3 ALL have had the heads off and been apart multiple times. Show all the YouTube videos and tech info you want. But I'll go off my personal experience. Keep your 6.0. I'll take a gas job over that mobile coolant pump any day

I'm getting the impression the 6.4 is great with deletes and a tune. I'm tired of my '04 Dodge 5.9 with 220k miles, its just problem after problem from wheel hub to injectors. I can't keep it on the road for more than 6 months straight. I've been looking into these 6.4s. I caught the Ford fever recently and Im gonna get a 6.4 when I sell my 5.9. This thread has helped me decide that.

How long do the auto trans hold up with these tunes? no slippage?
