Are the 6.4 really that bad?

I'm getting the impression the 6.4 is great with deletes and a tune. I'm tired of my '04 Dodge 5.9 with 220k miles, its just problem after problem from wheel hub to injectors. I can't keep it on the road for more than 6 months straight. I've been looking into these 6.4s. I caught the Ford fever recently and Im gonna get a 6.4 when I sell my 5.9. This thread has helped me decide that.

How long do the auto trans hold up with these tunes? no slippage?

im telling you dude... you Wont be happy.. IF anything.. d-max... lbz or lmm.. cheaper to make more power out of and you dont have to lift the cab. to do repairs.

the Ford truck will obviously hold up better than a Dodge over 8yrs and 220k. There are plenty of 6.4's out there over 200k

i have no doubt an 08 ford truck will hold up better than an 08 dodge. But from my experince with the 6.4's the motor wont hold up that long.

I was very close to buying a 6.4. Drove a friend of mines 09 6.4 with h&s and fell in love . At that time the truck had 60k on it, shortly after that he lost the atmospheric turbo, after that it developed a terrible oil leak (not sure what it was). Now it has right around 80k on it and its sitting at the ford dealership waiting on a motor.

how was it treated before he got it and deleted it?

grocery getter that was idled all day and oil changed at 10k?

did he check the engine hours on it?

buddy of mine bought a "junk" 08 6.7 brand new... did the DPF delete at 2500 miles w/ sims, then edge, then h&S. He sold it with just shy of 200k. He had to put two water pumps on the truck...

just dealt with a guy the other day with an '09 6.7. turbo cleaned, turbo replaced, dpf replaced under warranty, and now a locked up turbo and clogged dpf just out of warranty. Dodge wants ~$4500 to get him back on the road. those 6.7's must be JUNK!

any diesel that can't survive at high idle for prolonged periods, isn't much of an engine, there are loads of these trucks sitting with wrecked engines just past the warranty

I work at a diesel performance shop I've worked on both they are both nightmares however the 6.0 is much easier to work on. Personally I've seen better performance, fuel mileage and all around ride quality and luxury out of te 6.4. We haven't had any issues with them after installing the safety necessities( egr delet, head studs, dpf delet) personally I hate fords with a passion but if u must buy one 6.4 all the way.

I'll definitely have an extended warranty for any mishaps. If I didn't have one for my Cummins I'd never get ahead

extended warranty isn't worth the paper it's printed on... especially if you delete the thing.

buy a good one and just treat it right and it will treat you right

Let me know how you like that 6.4 when its 8yrs old with 220k on it. haha

My reg cab has 195k on her and drives just like my crewcab with 47k... And the.Fukers has been.wrecked lol. Great trucks imho. You treat the engine right, keep egr out of the intake and keep the egts down, and fuel dilution out by deleting the Dpf and they are good.

The cabs do not have to come off to do repairs! Ford designed the can to come off easy but its not required to do anything. I don't pull the cab unless the heads need to come off.

These were my rod bearings from my crewcab after 45 k of abuse since it was new. Had probably 500 passes on it. Half in the 13 sec range lifted on 37s and the rest under 12... Most high 11s

question though if you dont do any mods and dont touch the egr or dpf you think I'll have any problems? I really dont want to touch the truck just plain stock for warranty reasons.

Pistons would be my biggest worry. When I returned my truck back to stock to sell I put the Dpf on Regen temps are about 1300 degrees during the whole Regen. Also makes engine oil temps get warm Ect. Also Regens cause fuel dillution if you are pretty good about oil changes at 5000 miles you should be fine. Egr.... I hate but as long as a cooler doesn't burst you shouldn't have issues and the egr coolers on these aren't near as bad

yes, absolutely...

gut a DPF, and tune the truck. the tuning will turn off the EGR. I might know a guy who has a DPF to be hollowed out.

you can run stock power tuning

if somebody told you they'd cover all your health insurance costs as long as you ate nothing but McDonald's and only drank coffee and beer would you take them up on it?

Well my truck sits 90 percent of the time, I put 5k miles on my truck a year. I eventually want to delete that crap and get a tuner but I don't want to "have to" to save from problems down the road. I'm just confused and one guy says no and the other says yes I will have problems. I have noticed that since my truck sits alot it regens alot more often.

If ford is so good, why is it every time I see a broken truck on the interstate it is a ford. I have seen one dodge. Must just be my luck or the ratio off dodge to ford trucks.
My son works at Dodge Toyota dealership all Ford diesels go to the auction and 5.4 gas engines.
Never saw a Dodge with the cab off LOL.
I really think buying a Ford is like buying a Harley Davidson .....hype.
Just my 2 cents.

I have a Dpf that can be hollowed.

That's all I run is a hollowed Dpf/cat on my crewcab. Egr off tunes block plates are ideal but not manditory.

Sitting is probably harder on your truck than anything
