EFILive Beta First Impressions

Might of been covered but....us '05 guys are in the same boat as the '04 even tho the diff in motors?? '04 555-'05 600 or are the electronics the same?? The trans are even diff, 47re vs 48re('05^).

Forgive me if it's been covered.

Forgive me if it's been covered.

The HP/TQ difference between the 03 to early 04 vs 04.5-05 5.9L is simply the tuning in the ECU (as well as the piston bowl and injector spray angle differences). The ECUs themselves remain the same (SCI Interface). The thing that differentiates the 03-05 apart from the 06+, and the whole reason the 06+ is getting the attention first, has everything to do with the CAN BUS interface that the 06+ trucks use.

THANKS!!! Appreciate the time/info., that also means we get to wait even longer than '06^^ ppl since we're last on the list.

That means we'll even have our own tables/tunes?? Won't beable to go off what others have written as for tunes..

...The trans are even diff, 47re vs 48re('05^)...

The 48RE was offered in '03 with the high ouput engines whereas the 47RE came with the standard ouput engines. In '04 they stopped using the 47RE because they dropped the standard ouput engine option if I recall correctly.

It was 2 years after the 5.9L CAN that the 6.7L was released. You can't work on support for a vehicle that doesn't exist and I highly doubt that most of the products available spent that 2 years refining their 5.9L product while waiting for the 6.7L to hit the market.

So while they may have had 2 years, I don't think that translates into 2 years of development time.

We've already overcome the differences between the 5.9L and 6.7L ECM's - we are able to read and flash them. Our timeline revolves around maintaining a high level of service and support to our customers and dealers, so we've chunked our Cummins project into more managable tasks. (ie releasing support once ECM type at a time)

Cheers

Thanks for the reply. Understood that the 5.9CAN was 06 and the 6.7 was 07.5 I was referring to after the 6.7 was released in 07.5 we were mid year 2009 before tuners like the smarty and H&S XRT were available. With multiple threads and emails back and forth with cummins guys and MADS/Smarty telling us it was in development and would be released "soon". Please dont take any of this negatively, as I said I cant wait for EFI for my 6.7 was just curious if you guys had attempted things with it yetand glad to hear you have done some with it. Granted box foolers like the EDGE and a few others were out earlier actual Tuners were not for well over a year. Good luck and looking forward to END USER CONTROL.

Question for EFI Live Support.

I know I sound like a friggin noob here....

I have two trucks. a 2006, and a 2001(VP44)

Both are J1939.

I want to tune both....

I know the VP44 stuff is archaic and not really worth the developement time, but what differences (other than the obvious) are there between the two with respect to using EFI Live to tweak their respective ECM?

Back in the day, some could use the Cummins Insite software to tie directly into the ECM. This required the Inline II Adaptor....that or plug in modules are the only option.

I know the ECM/VP44 FPCM combination will only allow so much when ot comes to power addition.

I really only want to eliminate my Edge EZ....and keep the smooth power curve the current engine has.

This is exactly what a lot of people are telling us (along with the few die hards that would do anything for custom tuning). It's not on the drawing board at this point of time, but it will be something we will consider after we've finalised our current Cummins Support list.

It was a similar story for the 6.5L GM Diesel, we decided against creating support for a 10 year old vehicle to concentrate on more current vehicles.

Back in the day, some could use the Cummins Insite software to tie directly into the ECM. This required the Inline II Adaptor....that or plug in modules are the only option.

We plan on only supporting CAN and SCI at this point. From 2006 CAN is connected via the OBD-II port, earlier than that (2003-5) there is a CAN connection under the hood, but not to the OBD-II port. (This may be an option for the 2003-5 trucks, rather than SCI, but it would require some sort of adaptor and would require significant testing before we could commit/confirm it's a possibility)

From the little we know on the VP44 ECM, it appears it would be earlier technology to the CMB84x series ECM's, probably using a different microprocessor, so we would be starting all over with it, it's not going to be a shrunk down 2006 style ECM as far as the code goes.

No changes lately. Just waiting on data logging before we move forward again. Bobo and I have dialed some things in and are doing MPG testing now with what we have available.

Rob just curious here, is there something holding up the data logging side of things?

Nothing is holding it up - it just takes time to write good code.

Testers have hit their limits in terms of tuning without being able to see what is actually going on - all the fine tuning needs to be done with watching the logs, making changes and logging again.

Ross gave the testers the option of adding more parameters or implementing the scan tool - the testers voted scan tool; which effectively means that the 5.9L testers won't get anything more to play with for a week or so.

I believe the folks at EFILIVE posted that they had to go back and do some GM work for awhile as there was some glitches in teh latest software and they are trying to get A50 TCM flashing ready.

It's just the way beta happens. The great thing about this beta is that everyone doing the testing has been on the same page with what we feel is needed at each stage. Right now, we are gearing up to test the data logging. Everything is going as planned and the EFI Live team is busting their ass to get us what we ask for. We are a pretty demanding group!

That isn't impacting on Cummins 5.9L development - while Ross has moved onto the A50 and some other GM requests, we are still ploughing through the set-up of the Cummins Scan Tool data.

The aim is to have Ross finish his A50 and other stuff around the same time that Paul finishes the next release. This should also be the same time that the Scan Tool data setup is finalised ready for Ross and Paul to move into the next stage; our next 5.9L beta release :)
