Getting my 180 benched

So not much of a problem, but annoying.

If I have my AFC arm set for minimal smoke, it takes 5 seconds of cranking before she fires. If I bump it forward some, she starts fine, but pre boost smoke is absolutely ridiculous.

Is there anything that can be done about it? Or is it just one of the things that comes with a turned up pump?

To avoid this problem keep turning in your pre boost screw until the problem goes away. Try it a half turn at a time until the truck fires up as quick as you require.

Regarding smoke injectors are usually the biggest contributor or variable in my experience. Good luck.

The pre boost screw is doing the same thing as moving the whole housing though, just finer tuning. Either way, I get more pre boost smoke for good startups, or bad startups for less smoke. I have to sacrifice something.

Yep, no free lunch with these mechanical trucks. Seems everyone of these pumps is different. I have not run into starting issues but maybe once due to afc position and have not again since. I also run a maxed 180 pump. Even at 28-29 degrees and 155* injectors my truck fires right up.

On second thought tightening the pre boost screw will result in tighter resistance on the foot for the given foot position vs just sliding the housing forward which may help a little on pre boost fuel. Just a thought.

How is your off idle smoke?

How is your off idle smoke?

Near non existent. With the previous 5x20s 145* I could not get it to stop smoking anytime the throttle was touched at 23* or 28* with 181s, 191ish delivery valves, 8mm comps, or 7mm comps.

Don't forget I do have the spool flange to bring the charger on very quick all things considered. I would suspect part throttle smoke would go up without it. When I added it to the truck when running 5x20s it helped a good bit with the part throttle smoke but could not eliminate it. With these 155* 5x16s there is very little part throttle smoke and no cruise smoke off idle smoke.

So the spool flange really works?

I'm running 5x.016's with comp dv's. Cruising smoke is non-existant, as is WOT smoke, its just that off idle-5psi smoke thats killing me.

Power brake an build boost before taking off, problem solved lol

His big turbo would be better suited on top of an even bigger turbo in his other truck. IMHO

Small turbos are for the weak

:thankyou2:

Thats still being planned. I need a converter first.

True, I always forget about the other truck.

Me too sometimes.

No, it is soley sold as a conversation piece.

I didn't mean it like that weston. I meant does it work as good as everyone was hoping it would. I never caught any threads on it after it came to market. He's the only person I know that has one. If it really works that great, I'd consider one. Can you get them with a wastegate flange?

The man has a point.... Buy another!

Another what? 67? I think I'd go down to a 63 for the top. and as big as I can get a deal on for the bottom. I'm not looking for 2000hp, so I don't see the need for such a big secondary like a 67. And that combined with a super big primary would definitely be a spooling pig.

No offense taken, I have a sarcastic sense of humor. The flange cannot be had with a wastegate flange, we looked very hard at this, there is just no room. We are in a bit of a holding pattern on them now, deciding if I want to have them cast or not.

Do any dyno sheets exist to show how much faster a charger of any given size will spool? If it drops even 100rpm off my spool it'd be killer.
