Rebuilt 47RH Dies after 4 miles.

Snyder that's what he is saying . Is he not? If in fact they are all NEW then no core charge and no core needed .

Pictures:

OK guys, here are the pictures you've been wanting.

First, the brand new Oil:

Now, next two pictures are a set of measurements. The actual number by themselves don't mean much, but if you subtract the second number from the first you come out at less than .030" of clearance. Here is the first bit of proof there's a problem here!

First pic, Converter slid as far back into the tranny as possible:

Second, Converter slid out against flexplate:

Stamping numbers off converter. These are the only stampings on the entire converter:

Measurement showing the depth of the spline hub into the converter. This is about .070" less than it should be.

Over drive clutch pack pics:

Oil pump gears (.004" clearance)

Reaction shaft support where the pump gears ride. Does this look okay?

There they are guys.......

Did you check the seal on the overdrive apply piston, I wonder if it was folded over when it was installed or if it's torn. The last overdrive brake clutches I've seen like yours had a mangled seal on the overdrive apply piston.

I think you might be a fine concrete guy, but you don't know **** about a torque converter if you think twenty five thousands is enough clearance! While all of the racer boys were in kansas having there beer I was pulling transmissions on friday fixing this same type of bull****! DPC has built triples too tall for a year now thats the way it is! 1222 high falls rd. griffin ga. if you would like to see some I am available for your schooling! DTT is handleing this problem just as I am. Just because you have one that works does not mean this problem is not happening! Joe farmer, ashley black, an anyone else that would like to deal with a man that just lost 80,000 thousand dollars over this isssue bring you ass down and run you mouth in my parking lot! Or just keep typing as it costs you nothing!

Dodge Cummins Diesel Forum - Dtt torque converter problems

deerefanatic, what was the converter / flexplate clearance when it was installed new? My converter provider specified a minimum of 3/16 - 4/16 clearance.

IF there were a problem with the converters, the problem should have been caught upon installation.

stupid question, but did you have the TC bolts out?

Uh, yah..... This aint my first time around the block dude... :umno:

I know alot of people don't want to blame DPC. At this point, I can't come right out and say this is a DPC converter. But I'm 90% sure that's where it came from. Bill Kondolay himself wouldn't deny it Friday.

Big Blue, I'm not sure. I highly doubt the seal is folded over as transtec kits come with those awesome "lip wizard" discs that are really slick for getting those seals into place. But, I'll check that tomorrow and get back with you.

As for photos of the face/side of converter, heres a pic of the entire tranny on the jack:

Looks like lots of other triple discs that have Terry's triple disc kit parts.

Didn't really check it.... Way I was taught by my former boss was "as long as she don't bind and you can turn it freely before you put the flexplate bolts in, you're good".... Course, we always got remans and these were stocker stuff for average vehicles (half ton pickups, blazers, etc....) I was not aware of the need for free play. Course, the documentation that came with the rebuild kit/ converter/ etc was aweful vague...... As in, non existant.... This was a DIY kit, it should have at least had an 8.5x11 sheet with some "basic checks" on it. But, I won't b!tch about that. I coulda asked.

But I can tell you this, free play before wasn't much! As the photo above of the scarring of the hub splines in the converter proves. Oh, and YES, I did check the overall transmission input shaft free play before installing the converter and it was within specification.

I reason I asked was because I took out a pump once because of too little clearance. Happened to be a 2004-vintage DTT converter and a Reactor aluminum flex plate, but that doesn't matter. I installed it with too little clearance and ended up eating the $600 in repairs for the converter and new pump.

I'm not saying this is what happened in your case, but I know the feeling.

My pump's ok, or so it appears... But, it's not gonna be if I keep running this the way it is. The fact comes down to this:

1: I bought the Converter from DTT
2: I bought the flexplate from DTT.

One or the other or both is flawed. They need to fix it. ASAP. Tomorrow we'll see what happens.

As for the OD clutch burn up. I wonder to some extent if maybe the valvebody has issues.... So, I'm going to see if I can send it down to Dave Georend and have him put it on his valvebody tester....

I appreciate the offer, but I'll have to pass. I get all my tranny learning from Dave Goerend, and I still suck at it. So I just rely on him to get my stuff right the first time. Your good at a lot of things Jeff, but you really suck at trannies. Its nothing personal, just the truth.
