U D C

I agree data logging is very essential in the custom user end tuning aspect of things. I prefer to see exactly what's goin on when with my truck and have been doin a lot of researching. Can't wait for its release.

Frankly it's easy to tell the ECM to give you "x" value...but unless the built in limiter that prevents that "x" value to be achieved is turned off or modified to allow the increased value...it's not giving you what you want.

For example...factory timing limiter is set at 25*...so if you go into UDC and set timing at 29*@3600, but don't change the limiter...you ain't gonna get 29*...you'll just keep getting 25*.

There are ECM limiters for all rail tables, timing tables and duration.

So you can "ask" the ECM to give you "x" value, but unless those limiters are changed from factory...never gonna get them.

I'm sure Marco has changed them...but unless you have a way to verify (data log) then your guessing weather or not it's changed or to what value Marco changed them to.

Questions:
Has Marco or Bob given a estimated release date?
Is engine load basically throttle position?
It would be nice to be able to see rail psi and duration together for tweaking. I wonder if it could be possible to change views on what you want to see in the (3) views?
It would be nice just to read eng load(%) with the Smarty just for fine tuning. Could that be possible? To me that is the basics for what you would need for fine tuning.

I can't wait. The interface seems so easy.

just saw this at CF, hop[e he doesn't mind me saving him a few keystrokes.

Gang,
sorry, we 're in the "final rush" to get the UDC out. I have to choose if I spend my time on the forums or working on the UDC... guess why I've been so silent during the past month's.

Expected release date is in March. Yet, there's still a bunch of work that needs to be done before the final release. At the same time, I will need to train the sales people involved with the UDC ( before the release ) so that you guys can get the right product support. Several people will come for a visit.

Let's see...
1) Over time, we will cover all products. Except for the S04. That one has just not enough memory space on board. We will start out with the S06PoD,
SSR, JR for the 5.9L. Since we have to redo the firmware's for the Smarty's from scratch in order to work with the tuning software, right now we're trying to figure out a way how to convert the S06's into S06PoD with a simple software update. It's not looking too good right now. Yet, we're not giving up! Should we not be able to achieve our goal then we'll support the S06's anyway.

Let me say this one more time, from 98.5 to today, ALL products will be supported. It's just a matter of time and a ton of hard work.

2) More often than not, data logging the calculated load on the Cummins does not work. The ECM does not return the right values most of the times.
Why? Dunno, it's the way it is...
Think about the load as Throttle position and the world will become a better place. In fact, I'm considering to replace " Load " with "TPS" in the UDC. Altough that's not really right but it makes the thinking easier.

3) The parameters you tune do not go back into a stock software but into my base tune that I use in the Smarty. This is the reason why you can work only with the most performance relevant parameters.

4) Pricing is not yet set in stone but the UDC and eventual additional license pricing will be very reasonabel . That's all I can say right now.

I'm sure, I'm not getting into all the questions, sorry!
Keep in mind that the UDC is still evolving. For example, people have asked for an automated smoothing... that's in the works and will be there from day one. Of course, everything we add takes it's time. We work HARD to turn the custom tuning from "rocket science" into something you all can accomplish.

Cheers,

Marco

So is Marco telling us he will be actually changing his program to TPS so we can use as a guide for you to use to fine tune an area in a program? So if I can monitor TPS with some scanner it show me were to tweak in the program? Or is he just re-naming the field eng % field to TPS for people to think differently about adjusting his program? Time will tell I guest. March can't come quick enough:)

almost all smarties get a treat today, new files are up for jr, all the way through ssr, and from the looks 64 bit as well.

That's it? nothing else new in the tuning department?

As I'm updating the ssr to 1.7, a question comes to mind. How long does it take to down load UDC files to the smarty? Only reason I ask is for tuning on a dyno will take a long time if it takes 20 or so minutes to update the smarty for every change.

The recovery files take a few minutes to upload to the smarty, id hope these would too

That latest update is a bug fix for the 2003 & 2003.5 California emissions trucks ONLY! There was a problem when these trucks were returned to the stock software which is now solved. If you're truck is not one of the above, there's no need / sense to update your Smarty.

UDC upload & download times.

Uploading the stock parameters from the Smarty to the PC : Two seconds.

Downloading your modified parameters from the PC to the Smarty : Seven Seconds.

Downloading the UDC from the Smarty to the truck : Same programming times as before. 3-5 minutes. Perfect down-cool time for the truck on the dyno...

Helps?

Marco

Seems a data logger will really help this out! Can anyone recommend one that works well with the cummins?
