HTT 13ss Wastegate Cover

still ran good on top, just somewhat laggy on bottom. Im sure the wastegate crack didnt help.

If you have a spacer between the manifold and charger that wear is normal, I've seen that for years and it does not tear the turbine wheel up.

Jim

Divided or undivided spacer? My 13SS housing on top does NOT look like that.

Makes me worry about my bottom housing...I just D shape ported the housing smooth and put a nice knife edge on the divider....since the hot pipe is undivided...I figured that would smoothy the flow out a bunch. I hope it does not accellerate wear...

Wow! The cracked and worn divider, cracks around the pucks, and warped cover. There has been some heat in that exhaust housing! The big question is why? 1600 for a few seconds would not cause that. At least it never has on anything I have.

Paul

it probably occured, or at least started with an open spacer plate for the twins.

the 8.3 Cummins that I had in my fleet came from the factory with an undivided turbine gaskets... once the exhaust starts passing back and forth across the divider, it's all over. They would burn the dividing wall out of the manifold and the turbine housing like that. didn't cause any turbine damage

I hope the ehaust has cooled enough and the velocity slowed down enough by the time it gets to my bottom charger that it does not do that...

I am not worried about my top charger...since it is stainless.

well my charger went UPS today on its way back to utah (htt). will keep you all posted on what they say and do and charge (turbo has less than 1000m

don

ps - same type of problems as above - also bent the arm for the pucks to about 45° - first trip with the trailer - disappointed to say the least...

ps - i dont think i was the only one disappointed. after it feel apart i had to pull over and totally free up my afc spring so it would pull the trailer at all (was going (or trying to) from vegas to la area). that thing was SMOKEY and iyrc my ex exits the drivers side of my truck. lol. kept the gear vendors in low and the 4500 in 4th and the tack around 2500 (65-70 mph) cuz that was the only way it would run. surprised i didnt get pulled over...

Which exh hsg do you have? The 13's see to have more issues than the 16's. Never had any problesm with my .8 cast irons.

I modified my plate so it would allow it to open farther I also made a soft copper gasket to seal it do to the exh. brake and have no problems with it warping its in my video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAHmWUEvmzE&feature=channel_page

I vote your video for the "BEST YOUTUBE AUDIO TRACK EVER!" Award! I'll buy you a beer for not syncing that to AC/DC or Metallica or something retarded.

yes, it is a 13 s.s.

bent the arm in there pretty bad

the plate didnt warp btw

So who can I contact about modding my shaft and pucks for support on both ends? I'm less than impressed with my boost numbers max 36 PSI with vicegrips on actuator boost line. Plan on pulling turbo off the weekend to inspect. Depending on what I find should it go back to HTT or somewhere else?

did you tighten up the arm on the wastegte? even if you block off the boost signal, drive pressure is still going to act against the spring loaded arm and push it open

Tighted up all the way, this time no difference. When turbo was a 62, I got a few PSI out of it by painfully adjusting the actuator, but still maxed about 38PSI. Vice grips worked for 1 year and I could get 45-50 PSI depending on tune.

Sent turbo to HTT last fall to be upgraded to 64 (Engine was being rebuilt at the time.) They turned it around in a day, I had asked them to have a look at the wastegate, but i'm thinking it got missed.

BTW...you can grind on the arm of the wastegate to make it open way further...

But...it sounds like that is not anyones issue...lol.

ehh, reading all these problems about the 13cm2 SS housing almost is making me want to wait alittle bit before i drop some coin on one. has anyone come up a soild solution for the wastegate pucks???

wes

I think there are way more good ones than bad ones out there. Mine is a very early production model.

I had to grind the heads down on 3 bolts on the wastegate cover to keep from hitting my block. Dave @ HTT told me at the time, they later changed the casting to give more clearance. Only an issue on some motors, that was with stock manifold.

I also suspect the problem is more likely on a 65 than on the 71 because of the higher drive pressure and with larger pucks than a standard S300 the forces must be higher than a normal S300.

Bit of a sealing issue.
