Pilot Injection!! Can it be turned off??? Anyone know?

:Cheer:
It's actually 73.4mm, I round decimals properly for some reason? Just figured I would help with some of the confusion.

You know I was just messin with ya!! :Cheer:

Didn't realy matter to me except to Rib TY about it NOT being a 71...

All good though!!

BTW, I'm ususally OCD like that too!!! lol

I dunno if math changed since the last time I took elementary school math, but when you are going to do a "rounding operation" on a decimal, if the number is less then .5, you round DOWN, not UP. So I'm confused as to why they call it a 74mm wheel?

Has math changed? Or are Michigan schools that under-funded back in the 80's.

HA!!! Bigger is ALWAYS better ....Right!!!!

At least, That's what SHE said!!!! LOL So I always Round UP when I talking about the size of my " Hardware" .....LOL LOL

RATTLE / CLATTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

My truck sounds exactly like the one in the video, and the video of Ty doing a burn out, that's floating around here somewhere. I don't have cut pistons, and have never tried any other programmer other than the smarty. My head was machined, but I can't remember how much right now. I have a modified .020 over 12v head gasket, and O'rings at .009 thou. Right now I am not running any tuners at all. Injectors only, and it makes the sound just like everybody elses, though not as bad as when I load up the smarty. I have had the head off 3 times, pistons and cylinders look fine. I have had my injectors tested, they are good. I have had it looked at with a starscan. Found a popped relief valve, fixed, and makes the same noise. I am just going to live with it.

Man!!!

Well....What to do...!!!

I wouldn't think your decrompressed enough to even speak of and it's still doing it.....Hmmm

This is amazing to me that we don't have a clue on what this really is!!!!

I am almost sure we installed a stock 12v gasket witch is about .020 over.

Do you just mean that you did not cut out the extra water ports??

I've heard that CR do fine without matching the ports....right???

Not sure about the differences of loading one after the other....But, Would you mind sharring the brand / Tune of the one tha lower's RP at idle / low rpm??????

Bullydog has a tune called senator larry which is designed for highly modded trucks. I lowers rail pressure at idle to 5k. Might be worth a try if you still have access to a bd

Yeah, .020 over the MLS gasket... I think you're right! Still kinda scared to turn up the juice and find out if she'll hold for sure though. :gag:

No, we had a machine shop work some wonders to match up all the passages to a CR MLS gasket. I tried using a standard 24v gasket the first time, and it lasted about a week. I don't know, it was probably my error in how I torqued the head down that time.

That Sounds like a tune I'd like to try but unfortunately I already freakin Sold my BDTD!!!!

My luck!!

I wonder why no one else has tried to do this!! Sounds like something I need!!!!

Once again, once I get my RP gauge in from backorder...I'll do some testing and then maybe DonM will let me try is box that pulls the pressure down as well!! I think something like this may work decent!!

How come Don hasn't marketed this pressure box?I know Lloyd has had one for a while.I never knew it could drop the RP.This would be great for everyday driving on the 04.5's and newer.Bring the cruising RP down to more inline with the 03-04's and add to the life of the injectors.

I just got word that another tune (Different brand) was loaded on my truck and may have helped quiet it down quite a bit.....(don't start rumor's..not trying to leave Smarty..Just testing...)

More to come later!!! Jeff did it for me...its down there and I'm stuck here in this Dang patrol car today, tmrw, and Sun!!!!

I'm going down on Monday to do some testing with it!!! Cross the fingers!!!

Yeah, I've been in contact with Don and he's shed some light on a few issues....I've been waiting on my RP gauge to come in. It's been on Back order...Don wants me to wait until I get the gauge on it so I can let him know what's it doing......He has said wether or not he'll hook me up with the custom box or not......He already done so much for me, I hate to bug him too much....But if it'll help, I really hope I get the chance to try one...

Well Dang!! If it's 100% from my lower'd compression, I almost wish I could go back in time on my build...I probably still cut them a little but no where near as much as I did.......But your theory makes total since though.....I guess decompressing a 12V and vp trucks works great and thats why Jeff's done if for so long, but these dam 3rd gen trucks with the 3 injection events a Total different animal!!

Any other idea's on how to fix this for me??????....I might try a 12v injector washer to try to lower my injector in the bowl a bit....I'm just not sure about how well the crossover tubes will seal up....Once I get my gauge, maybe Don will let me try his pressure box........I just don't want to have to REBUILD my whole engine again to get rid of it!!!!!!!:bang

Correct me if I'm wrong, but on the 24V/CR motors you can't play with the washer thickness like the 12Vs since it will throw the connector tube connection out of wack. Then you'll have alot of rattle AND a fuel leak LOL

Well, I've never done it myself BUT, Brain storming with two prominate Cummins engine builders and speaking with a Very prominate Diesel tech guy in the industry that had evidently done it....I think it can be done....

Upon close inspection of a CR head and crossover tube, it seems there may be room for some flex of the tube in there....

I agree that it sounds like it might not work well....I'm still undecided if I'm going to try it....

I will let you guys know if I do and the outcome....I just want to see if it makes the rattle/clatter lesson a bit...Even if it I don't leave it like that...It would be an interesting experiment to say the least!!!!!

They must have a little bit of flex or they all would leak for most of us who re-use the same washers for years and years and multiple injections swaps/removals. I know the washer has to be slightly thinner than when it rolled off the factory floor... I've pulled my injectors atleast 10-15 times by now.

Good point!

We're only taking about .040 of flex......CR washer is .060 and the 12V is .020 I believe......

I think it's worth a shot for the few hours of labor!!

Anybody disagree??

BTW, I've done a 16.5 hr day and gotta be back up on 0430 to start another 12.5 hr. day....So, I'll catch you guys/gals on the flip side!!!!!

David

I agree.. I would be interested in the results... O and BTW you should do like most of the cops here in Houston and hang out at the firestation to catch up on rest.. :shake:

Swole... you can play with washer thickness with 12V's but, not in our truck !

The washer thickness is 1.5mm and to vary it either way would cause the cross over tube to NOT line up correctly.
Like I told you before... you're welcome to try it. I wouldn't take the chance though. For one, your not going to move the injector enough to make a difference and another... it's not gonna do what you think it will. I would put money on the fact your injectors aren't so far out they would cause your problem.

I went over this with Dan Scheid and a few of the tech that work for him. There's a very fine line with those injectors and varying from it will cause more problems for you.

You also have to remember... you're dealing with prominate guys in the industry who know 12V inside and out. Our truck are quite a bit different.

With my engine, after I tweeked some rods, I had this same sound as you in the video's, same thing..boost it a bit and it went away.

Bent rods did this,

lowered compression,
Moved piston away from injector,
Looser quench area (top part of piston more far away from head)

One of these or a combination, resulted in way more noise, simular to what's in the videos.

Is the sound that bad....maybe not, sure is annoying though.
