Pilot Injection!! Can it be turned off??? Anyone know?

I thought that sounded strange too!!!

SB specs are 66/74/14...Im pretty sure!!

What's up with this TY/?? Maybe a typo!!! ???

You mean 65 compressor side or exducer ???

HA!!! I /we highjacket my own thread!!!! LOL

OK..........RATTLE / CLATTER!!!!!!!

back on track!!! lol

That's what I assume it is. I thought all SB's were the 66/71/14 too but, after talking to Brady.... he said the SB's all had 65mm wheel unless you asked for an upgrade to a 71. That doesn't surprise me one bit. You think you're getting one thing and you get another. It could be a 71 though...I've never bothered to measure it

I paid $1650 for it through a group buy.

Hope you weren't surprised by this. hehehehehe.

nope... not at all. Kinda hard to be loyal to anyone when they offer nothing.

Brandon ( Joefarmer ) was the first to jump in and try to help 2 yrs ago. He was on the right track with his first response. I looked into it as far as I could and not being a Cummins computer/injector guru.... I didn't get too far.

Now you really got me confused!!!

The compressor side could be 65-66 but the SB line of turbos Have a 74 exducer on the exhaust side with a 14mm housing....

The 74 is why they spool so slow!!! but drive pressures and egts are down with them!!

71 (exducer) are in the SPS's and 65 exducer's in the PS's for quicker spool but higher drive press. and egt's!!!

RATTLE /CLATTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL Back on topic!!!

nope... no 74 wheel. That's their new wheel and you pay through the wazooo for it

I had the turbo rebuilt and asked Brady to upgrade it as a sponsorship type deal. Well, that didn't happen and they wanted $1200 for the rebuild and upgrade which was a discounted price since he couldn't sponsor it !

Not trying to show you up but this is directly from thier site!!!
Has been this way since I had my Silver 62...

74 Exducer!!!! is in all SB's

Another first! The Silver Series PhatShaft is our latest effort to achieve perfection. Much like the Super PhatShaft it was designed to handle multiple fueling upgrades and comes in three sizes 62mm 64mm, and 66mm. What separates the Silver PhatShaft from the SuperPhat Shaft is our new technology 74mm turbine wheel. To improve on the Super PhatShaft turbos we needed improve performance at a lower rpm range and we needed to reduce compressor surge. We came up with is the 74mm turbine which is the latest in turbine trim design technology. The new trim design transfers exhaust gas energy more efficiently than any other turbine on the market. It also allows for better exhaust gas expulsion which results in lower EGt’s and quicker rotor acceleration. The most important benefit of the 74 mm turbine wheel is that it gets rid of turbo surge and broadens the power band range. Another identifying characteristic of the Silver series PhatShaft is the polished compressor housing. The Silver series utilizes the proven 14cm exhaust housing in which we modify the angle of the exhaust nozzle. We also maximize the wastegate ports and enlarge the wastegate chamber for full wastegate travel. Like all PhatShaft turbochargers they are equipped with dual grooved high performance bearings and an adjustable boost elbow. Our Sliver chargers have been proven to support up to 800hp and are the best turbochargers on the market today.

Ok,

Has anyone tried a LOW timing program like the one PPE has , for this rattle????

ok, back on track. Here's a list of things I did in hope of eliminating this rattle. You're more than welcome to do the same... maybe one of them has a answer now ???

  • Starscan to check parameter including " actual and demanded psi " all was right where it should be.

  • replaced.....MAP, RP, CrankPS & CamPS no change

  • tried numerous Smarty softwares... Beta 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, TNT, TNT-R - Ran BDDL 2.4 PL custom tune from PDI - removed all electronics but, nothing helped

  • Scheid sent me a brand new set of Lightning 10 hole injectors. They have many customers using them and are completely happy. They made no difference in my truck at all as far as rattle

  • installed the extra pin into my Fluidamper

  • pulled the head to inspect for visual damage. Took measurement for protrusion of injectors, measure existing and new head gasket.... found nothing. While the head was off, I installed new Hamilton springs and push rods. The springs I replaced were F1 sportsmens. I've checked valve lash more times that I care to count.

  • I have a modded rail and thought possibly that was doing something. I installed a stock rail to see and nothing.... same rattle.

  • My injectors have been tested 3 times. Once by Don and twice by Scheid. they're in prefect condition.

  • I tried pouring a gallon of oil in the tank.... didn't do a thing.

  • I tried running straight 30w oil.... nothing

  • I've had oil samples done several times... nothing out of the ordinary was found

  • I've replaced all the fuel lines from the rail, I had extruded cross over tubes that I replaced with stock and nothing.

  • The tranny was rebuilt 6 months ago and it looked as if it was never driven hard so, nothing there

  • Talked to Dan @ PPE and replaced the wiring harness that they send with their dual kit... nothing

  • I've talked to Lloyd Mills, Tim Barber, Jeff Garmon, Dan Scheid, Bo Layne, Kent Crowder, Dave @ Floor it, Dave @ TST, Bob Wagner on many occasions, attempted to talk to Don M, Brady and his son @ II ( forget his name ), Shane @ Wicked, Todd @ T&C and probably several more that I can't think of. Everyone has theories but, I don't think enough is known about the CR to make a exact call.

That's the " Fat Shaft" Dave. Not what I have and is their newest turbo

like I said... I went by what Brady told me. When I bought it, I assumed I was buying a 66/71/14. I guess I could measure it but really, what does it have to do with what we're talking about.

Lloyd ? Why did you ask ?

I think ty got "shafted" LOL

it wouldn't surprise me

If I did then about 21 other guys did too. We all got the same deal through PDI on a group by that II advertised for here.

I'll have to measure it now. With the way my truck runs and spools... it probably is the 71. If you've ever talked to Brady, you know he can be in several directions at once so who knows

things I haven't tried.....
  • install stock injectors ( no point though, can't go backwards )

  • pull the cam to look for visual damage ( valve lash would be out but, that's never been the case )

  • pull the oil pan to look for visual damage to rod bearings ( soon I hope )

  • format the ECM... no way to as far as I know and don't have $1500 for a new one.

  • rotate CP3 30 degrees. Not real sure it would do a thing as they aren't timed

Anyone tried the tone ring mod to retard the timing? If it works, power might be less but it would verify spray vs. piston position. Just a thought.

One would think software could be written to do that. However, No one from the software companies tend to respond to real good, very technical threads like this. That's rather sad if you ask me. Come one Software guys, how about some support and suggestions and theories as to what is going on?

TY , thanks for posting a list of everything you've tried!!!! You've been through a lot!! But, YES YOU HAVE A 74 TURBINE WHEEL!!!!!! LOL

Not really sure on the tone ring thing....I heard people talk about it but never thought of trying.....

TY, as far as thing you haven't tried.....I agree, not going to smaller injectors just to remove the sound....If I was gonna do that, I just put it ALL back to stock and go to a 12V like I've threatened to do !!!!! LOL
Still may do that someday!!!

The SB turbine is 73mm, it is clipped but will still produce higher drive pressure than the 71mm turbine. Both the 71-73mm turbine wheels are 10-blade, and the 65mm turbine wheel is 11-blade. The cast housings are 12cm and 14cm not mm.

OK!!! DAMN!!

If its 73 then Why the Fu*% do they(I.I.) print 74!!!!!!!

as for me typing mm instead of cm on the housing..Brain Fart!!..Sue Me!!

LOL LOL

Now back to your regular scheduled programming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

=) :Cheer:

Because that would release the magic code that would allow use to tune our own trucks.

It's actually 73.4mm, I round decimals properly for some reason? Just figured I would help with some of the confusion.

I dunno if math changed since the last time I took elementary school math, but when you are going to do a "rounding operation" on a decimal, if the number is less then .5, you round DOWN, not UP. So I'm confused as to why they call it a 74mm wheel?

Has math changed? Or are Michigan schools that under-funded back in the 80's.
