Post 60' Times, Manual Transmission

Hey fellas I need some advice fast on how to launch better with my 6 speed. Were going to the drags this weekend and I've gotta beat my little brothers spartaned 08 ford. Having a huge issue with either bogging it down or spinning through 5 gears. I need some tips. I'm thinking about trying a 4x4 launch but would rather not.

If ya'll could give me some tips and advice on how to launch better I'd appreciate it a lot

Why are you worried about launching in 4? You ain't gonna hurt anything. Well you might hurt the trans if your launch is too rough. And if you do it one to many times, but the frontend will be fine if that is what you're worried about.

Unless his truck is just slow, I don't see how else you are going to get him.

Ok so how should I go about 4x4 launching. 2nd or 3rd gear. What do i need to do with the pedals in order to stall it up and get it to launch good.

Just free rev the motor to 3400 rpm or so in 2nd gear and let out of the clutch a little slower than normal. When you get the clutch release perfect, you won't shock load the drivetrain so hard that you get front wheel hop/bounce but instead you will rocket off the line.

For a 3rd gear launch, you will have to ride the clutch more and take a full second letting out of the pedal. If you let out too quickly you will bog the motor.

There really is no need to do a "boosted launch." If you free rev the motor high enough and develop a little skill on clutch release, there is no need to try to 3 pedal your truck, heat up the clutch, just to build a few extra PSI boost.

On my truck with 3rd gen turbo, 3800 rpm free rev is 6-8 psi boost anyway.

This is what worked for me. I just copied my post to a guy off of cummins forum.

I've seen threads that share this same topic and the answers are just as different as the guys that give 'em. Some guys use 2nd some 3rd some slip the clutch some dump it. You just gotta get out there and try it all. I toyed with the heel toe idea, but it just didn't work out. I try and get staged first. Gives you an extra second or 2. I blip the throttle up to I don't know 2200-2500 or so. And by blip I mean stab the throttle and let off repeatedly and keep the r's hovering. If you just hold the throttle steady it doesn't seem to build that small amount of boost. When it gets to that last yellow I come off the clutch and stab the throttle. Seems to work fairly well. Warning it is extremely hard on the trans! I mean everything's hard on stuff, but this was bad I was hopping like mad! Traction bars really woulda been nice. I ended up with a broken output shaft on my 13th run.

So after the launch I no lift shift (not lifting off the throttle, but I do stab the clutch pedal) the rest of the way down the track. Well that's not entirely true I was having a really tough time not lifting from 2nd to 3rd. For whatever reason I just kept lifting I also was shifting out of 5th too early. I probably could have just run it out in 5th. That's where a data logger would be nice. Give you an idea of what the heck you're doing.

That was my first experience at the track, and I thought it went fairly well......if we avoid looking at the breakage anyway :bang

The way I ran it was good enough to get my 8000lb truck down the track in 13.88 I dyno'ed the other day and apparently I'm only making 420 HP? Doesn't jive with the HP Calculator on the site here. So I must have done something right, or the dyno was way off. The HP number was slightly disappointing, but I'm okay with the timeslip........for now :Cheer:

Looks like if you can get a launch figured out you should be laying down some good times with the amount of power your mods should be netting you! Good luck, can't wait to hear how you did :rockwoot:

I used to use the E brake befor i put the line loc in, Put it third gear, set the ebrake in the first lite, Bring the r's up as high as yu need, use the clutch to bump in the second light with out letting the r's fall to much, once your in the second lite (with right hand on the wheel, and left on the e brake release) Hold the R's up with a very lite load on the clutch (you dont wanna burn it up) Just enough load to keep it from shoking the drive line when you launch. when the third yellow lights, mat the throttle, pop the brake, and let the clutch out as quick as you can but dont just dump it. A third gear launch should get you through the 60' mark and give you plenty of time to get you hand back on the shifter! Using this method Ive gottn plenty of 1.7x 60's and never broke a thing and have had obout 100 launches on both clutches!

Vid of a launch doing it this way, this was a 1.77 60' IIRC!

I'll have to try that sometime! Sounds semi-complicated, but anything that's easier on the drivetrain is worth a shot. What's your truck weigh and were you racin' on 245/16's?

i am not sure what my times are i belive about 1.85 60" i am launching at 3500 to 3800 rpm 3rd gear in a 5speed making some where in the 400hp range my time was an 8.93 1/8 mile at 80mph i sometime go screw with the import cars and i launch so hard on them they give up before haft track i love 3rd gear launches just have to have the RPM UP^^^^ Front wheel drive Ricers will FEAR you launching on them taking three to four lengths right off the line

what settings on the smarty/adr stack?

Mine pulls hard with the "jamie Lent" tune and smarty sw3 timing 4?

but i haven't tried many yet

Had them both on kill, with timing turned off on adrenaline - went the other way with SW8 on smarty, and Adrenaline on kill and seemed quicker...

So far, Jamie has not enlightened me...

Right now, quad has my ADR1000, so no testing till it gets back:nail:

Hope to have it figured out for the Bowling Green event though...

Maybe. There was a guy on Cummins Forum that was running the 1/4 in low or mid 13's on a stock clutch. He had to be cutting some pretty good 60ft times!
