The Garmon built "Interceptor" build status!

David, congrats buddy, and don't let that little rattle bother ya, mine does it too and our setup is identical except for the cut pistons. I have developed a theory as to the cause but haven't tried it yet. I think the rattle may be due to inadequate rail p for those first few seconds when you mash the throttle, mine too only does it when there is no boost. I am the ring leader in the "Increased Rail P. is Bad Crowd" but I was going to add some pressure (like mild and try moderate if that didn't work) with the Smarty to see if it changed anything. Don't think that just because you have dual pumps you couldn't possibly have inadequate rail p., the cause here isn't lack of pump muscle but inherent in the software of the truck, I have seen this on a MODIS, you hit the throttle and the rail p. drops 3-5 K for about 1 second and the rattle occurs at this time, then quickly recovers. I am sure Ty experimented with this and evidently it didn't help. But I am going to do some tinkering when the weather gets better, why don't you give it a try and I will too and see what we come up with. Jay

GOOD NEWS!!!

This thing HARDLY smokes at all!!! WOW!!!! These F1 Flux 3.3's are awesome!!!! Only thing is, I could've gone a little bigger and been fine!!!! Oh well, NEXT time!!! =)

Seems to spool Very well with the Htt 62/71/13ss on top......Probably being helped by the F1 H2 Billet cam.....It's very nice!!!!

Haven't got to play with the wastegate tunning tool yet....Had NO clue were to really start....Just tightened down a little and drove it !!!!!! lol
ANYBODY have some suggest, Please let me know.....I've gotta get a second boost guage for the bottom so I can tune them to 50/50 like Nathan says.....

Only hit 60 psi of boost so far....But, It got there QUICK!!!! =)

Did some Hard roll on's.....WOW!!! 60-120 is like, "RITE NOW!!!!!"

I left a light and just tooled on up to about 55mph and let the convertor lock on it own...cruised slowly to about 60.......Stabbed the skinny pedal and let it down shift to 3rd......SOON as it did, I Manually Called LOCK UP......This SOB broke loose at about 60-65mph and spun'm for a good bit!!!!!!
WHOA DUDE!!!!! THAT IS THE CHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!:rockwoot:

I know what you mean!!!

I sure would like a liston to that rattle.....think you can get a vid or recording of that...

May have to get someone else to handle that for me.....I don't know how to upload vids and I don't think my laptop is up to the task.......LOL

I've got old electronic chit!!!! lol

I'll see what I can come up with .......I know TY had a vid of his doing it....See if he can post it!!!! TY????? C'mon buddy.....Let him here it!!

I've gotta go back down tmrw. with my motorcycle so I can load it and drive my truck home....Getting all my vehicle back here....

I'm gonna spend some time playing with my Smarty settings too....I will do my best to come up with something....But, TY has tried just about everything on the tunning deal...

I have not yet seen if it does it without programming at all....I will try that tmrw. too.....

BTW, It does the rattle ANY time im under 7-8 psi......Cruise down the road on flat ground, It's rattling.......Slight hill that requires throttle input, MAN it rattle's......

???????????????????????????????? HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks great David. Glad you got that dude up and running. Cant wait to see it run!

Congrats Dave!!!! Rattle part sucks!!

I finally grew some and punched mine from a 30 roll and 110 came quick!!! No smoke also! 58lbs only which is low to me! LOL

I still think its from lowering the compression.....and pilot injection.....

Now my reasoning, you lower static compression right......, and under no boost you operation at a lower compression.

Now add some boost, and at a point now were back to stock compression, dynamically, rattle goes away.

Thats been my theory anyhow, Its of interest, I debated long and hard about lowering the CR and in the end stuck with stock, maybe slightly higher, from oversized pistons.

this is the only one I have. You can hear the rattle but, nothing like being in the truck.

I've tried every different Smarty level and adjustment. No help, tested injectors and even tried different injectors...nothing, removed all electronics...nothing. I've done everything but, check the bottom end and cam. I've found no problem so far as far as damage or causes.

EPA: it's an idea but, I don't think that's the right track. My RP probably ramps up too fast. Some software changes on the Smarty will definitely alter the RP, up and down.

IMO, it's sure narrowing down to unavoidable combustion knock. I believe it's natural sound for the 24v. The CR's third injection event was built in to help cut noise down but, we've done something to alter that ??

My wifes completely stock truck has the same rattle but, it's no where near as distinguished as my truck. It's a subtle sound under the normal sound of the engine.

Thanks dude!!!

Yeah, I was kinda suprised at only 60 psi too......

Plan on playing with the gate at little to see what happens....

WOW after listening to that video, I'm sure my theorys right.....Hear, when after you started them smoking, (rattle gone) then you let off a bit, boost still up, but your rail should have dropped a fair bit, then you layed into it again, no rattle......

I don't think it's about RP but, I very well could be wrong. I've had the same problem as most who have the rattle....

doesn't do it ( bad ) until at operating temp, only does it a low RPM or boost. Once boost or rpm's are up, it's still there... just not as pronounced.

I can load the truck dumping smoke which quiets it down too or if there's a load on it ( up hill / on the dyno with the dyno brake on LOL )

Yeah, I don't think its rail pressure, just lower static compression, how about if your crusing down the road, let off the throttle, 0 boost then give it some throttle I don't know 5%.....so that you don't bring on the charger......Rattle?

didn't mean to jack your thread Swole. It's no consultation to you or others but, I feel better that my truck isn't the only one doing it. When I first started hunting down the issue over a year ago.... no one had ever heard of the problem.

Joe, it's a horrendous rattle doing just what you said. The only way to get away from the noise is to, turn the radio up ( I've gotten used to this :-) ) or keep the boost over 10psi and the rpm's over 2K ( uses too much fuel and causes me to break the law LOL

HELL YEAH BROTHA..... You really need to get that second boost guage in ASAP... your overworking your top turbo is why your numbers are so low... I am trying to thing at the moment but if my memorey is correct you need to tighten the spring on the wastegate...

P.S. are you and Trition goona go to T.S.??? few of us fools out here have a road trip planned!!!

Yeah, sorry Big Swole,....don't want to jack your JOY!!! just I've put a lot of thought into this rattle, Cause I wanted to avoid it if possible...some how I avoided it.

You all, with twins and that spring deal, school us on setting it......So far I found with it on the loose side, the big charger does more work, and seems more oompfff in the top end.

tighten it down, and more boost fast, but tight, High exaust pressure.

For a comparison here's a link to a vid of my truck....

Shoot!!! I don't care about the Jacked thread.....lol.....I just wanna come up with a FIX for it!!!1

As for feeling better at my expense......LOL.........I'd be the same way dude!!!! At least everyone reading this thread willl now know what to expect from decompressing a CR.....Let's hope someone can help find a fix....

Geez where the hell is the smoke... LOL

The spring can be a frustrating thing.. I bet i spend well over a week tuning and tweeking to get everything finalized, then I would put different Phacking injectors in and have to start all over..:bang

Like you said though if it is too loose it will over work the bottom charger and vise versa... I ended up having to shim my spring with about 3 more washers to make it stiffer. Idealy you want a 2 to 1 ratio... and this won't be true while cruising around town.. THis is when you hammer it and your azz cheeks pucker up and suck part of the seat up.. Sooo if your top charger is peaking at 60 psi you want the bottom charger to peak at 30 psi...

My top charger would start to spool at 1100 rpms and then the big kat would kick in at 1900 rpms which was awesome because i towed at 1900 rpms and with 20k in tow it didn't mattter when you stepped on it you could damn near rip the axles off the trailers...

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! VERY!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeez, don't know what to tell you, I'm 90% sure that the lower static compression is messing with the pilot injection. I think you will find that the sound will be always directly related to boost. Nothing to do with rail pressure.

BUT Rail can get you that too, I do get some timing sound when I really jack the rail, like up into the 25-27,000 I start geting some injector sound i don't really like.

GOOD news, Triton has been flogging his ride for how long now and still going strong!
In the long run lower compression should be easier on hard parts! Little easier keeping the head on the block.
